The Cell Histology Lab conducts research in regenerative medicine centered on Muse cells, a novel type of pluripotent stem cell. Muse cells are stem cells found in the mesenchymal tissues of adult humans that can differentiate into various types of cells, and they were discovered by this lab. Because these cells can be obtained from adults, are non-tumorigenic, and have a broad capacity for tissue repair, they are expected to be applied to a wide range of diseases. The lab works on both basic analysis and application to regenerative medicine.

The Medical Biochemistry Lab studies how redox (oxidation-reduction) metabolism in the body supports the regulation of gene function. It aims to understand the mechanisms by which living organisms respond to stress, adapt to their environment, and sustain life. The lab investigates the roles in the body of supersulfide molecules, recently discovered biomolecules, and seeks to clarify the basis of inflammation and cancer pathology. Overcoming intractable cancers with abnormally activated NRF2 is also one of the lab's central research aims.

The Diagnostic Radiology lab handles diagnostic imaging performed in the hospital, as well as IVR (interventional radiology, or image-guided treatment), in which thin needles or catheters are inserted into the body under image guidance to treat disease. Diagnostic radiologists also act as specialists who "read" (interpret) images obtained from CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, and PET examinations and make medical diagnoses. The lab has specialists by organ system, such as neuroradiology, chest, abdominal, and cardiovascular imaging, and by examination method, and it also works on the use of AI and on cutting-edge nuclear medicine research. On the lab's website, it is presented as the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Cancer Nursing lab works on developing care that improves the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients. Its main research theme is the development of a telenursing system. After discharge, patients enter their symptoms into a tablet every day, and doctors and nurses at a remote location check the data via the cloud and send advice. In education, the lab aims to train healthcare professionals with specialized knowledge and skills in cancer nursing, and to train educators and researchers who can contribute to that training.

The Endowed Lab for Regional Healthcare Collaboration in Heart Failure was established in April 2023 and aims to build a new model of heart failure care. Among cardiovascular diseases, the number of heart failure patients is rising rapidly, and preventing its onset and worsening is considered extremely important. In Miyagi Prefecture, where the population is aging, the lab aims to collect heart failure case data, building on a network of affiliated hospitals centered on Tohoku University. The lab's introduction page is within the website of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Biodefense Lab (Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer) studies the immune system in relation to cancer, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases caused by immune abnormalities that accompany aging. The lab focuses on how NK cells and T cells distinguish their target cells. Using animal models and genetic engineering techniques, the lab clarifies how diseases develop, with the aim of developing new diagnostics and treatments. The lab welcomes students from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in its research.

The Cognitive Physiology Lab (Igarashi Lab) studies where in the brain information received from the outside world is converted into control of intention (cognitive control). Focusing on a brain region called the lateral entorhinal cortex, the lab has studied how olfactory information is converted into memory information. Going a step beyond its previous memory research, the lab aims to move on to research on cognitive control, which gives rise to the mind. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Igarashi Lab."

The Developmental Neuroscience Lab uses rats and mice to study how the mammalian brain is formed. The lab explores at the molecular level how the brain forms, develops, and is maintained. When small flaws enter these mechanisms, neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder arise. The lab is also interested in how the large neocortex that leads to humans was acquired, and in how sex differences in the brain arise. The lab takes part in the Neuro Global International Joint Graduate Program, and has many international students.

The Developmental Environmental Medicine Lab studies how the environment during the fetal and neonatal periods affects the development and growth of children after birth. Based on the DOHaD hypothesis, the lab focuses on exposure to chemical substances such as secondhand smoke, to heavy metals, and to digital devices. The lab analyzes information collected through questionnaires and in-person surveys, using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), a birth cohort study run by the Ministry of the Environment since 2011. The lab also conducts joint research with clinical departments at Tohoku University Hospital and affiliated hospitals.

The Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine Lab focuses on pancreatic islet transplantation and hepatocyte transplantation as treatments for diabetes and liver disease. Islet transplantation is a minimally invasive cell therapy in which the pancreatic islets, which regulate blood glucose, are isolated from the pancreas and transplanted into the liver in a manner similar to an intravenous drip. The lab aims to establish a curative therapy for severe diabetes, including type 1 diabetes, which was previously considered incurable. Together with the staff who carry out clinical islet transplantation, the lab conducts translational research that bridges basic research and clinical practice.
