Pediatric Pathophysiology (Department of Pediatrics, Tohoku University School of Medicine) is a department that aims to deliver clinical care, education, and research on childhood diseases, each at a high level. At the university hospital, pediatricians specializing in hematology and oncology, neurology, nephrology, neonatology, endocrinology, inborn errors of metabolism, and cardiology provide highly specialized care in outpatient clinics and on the wards. One example of the research the lab aims for is to start from the patient in front of them and propose previously unknown disease concepts, clarify pathophysiology, and suggest new treatments. In the professor's message, the professor says they keenly feel the weight of the words of the fourth professor of the department: "Understanding physiology through pathophysiology."

The Emergent Medicine Lab practices "serendipity engineering," which deliberately generates unexpected discoveries, and aims to extend it into medicine. Using new biotechnology that integrates biochemistry, photon science, nanotechnology, and information science, the lab aims to discover unknown biological phenomena and apply them to medicine. The lab conducts its research by combining theory, experiments, and computation. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Goda Lab."

As part of social medicine, the Health Policy lab deals with the laws and systems of health care, medicine, and research and development that contribute to people's health. Laws and social systems do not directly save the individual patient in front of you, but they directly and indirectly affect the lives, livelihoods, and futures of many citizens. As part of the Biobank Division of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, the lab also works every day on creating value from biobanks and promoting joint research with companies.

The Department of Urology works on cutting-edge treatment and research for urologic malignancies, with an emphasis on quality of life (QOL). It was founded in 1959 as a urology department that emerged from surgery. The department performs adrenal surgery and is also actively involved in research on the QOL of people who have experienced testicular cancer. After obtaining specialist certification, many members enter graduate school, choose either basic or clinical research, and are supervised by their academic advisor all the way through to the completion of their degree.

The Human Brain Science lab studies what brain mechanisms give rise to the distinctly human mind, behavior, and society. Using functional brain imaging, physiological and behavioral measurement, and social surveys, the lab aims to develop a brain science that serves as a "hub" connecting every academic field related to human nature. As a cooperating department of the Division of Medical Science, Graduate School of Medicine, the lab accepts master's and doctoral students, and welcomes students from both the humanities and the sciences. On the lab's website, it is presented as the "Sugiura Lab" and is introduced as a field of both the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer and the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Gastroenterological Surgery Lab conducts a variety of research to improve surgical outcomes and trains young surgeons. Regarding it as the university's role to produce the evidence on which clinical practice guidelines are based, the lab pursues both basic research and clinical research. It carries out clinical practice and research in each area: esophagus, stomach, lower gastrointestinal tract, hepato-biliary-pancreatic, transplantation and liver, and vascular. The lab's website presents it together with the Breast and Endocrine Surgery Lab under the name "General Surgery."

The Medical Ethics Lab studies a wide range of ethical issues related to medicine and public health, through both normative analysis and empirical research. Beyond the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Medicine, the lab has also been responsible for education in bioethics and medical ethics in other faculties and graduate schools. It offers a special master's course, the "Training Course for Leaders in Medical Ethics and Public Health Ethics," in which students can also experience actual ethics review. The lab is also engaged in clinical ethics consultation at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Disaster Obstetrics and Gynecology field studies how disasters affect pregnant women, babies, and gynecologic diseases. Because childbirth continues to occur even in the midst of a disaster, the lab aims to build systems for perinatal care during disasters and to establish international standards for them. The lab investigates the effects of stress on pregnant women and the effects of life in evacuation shelters on gynecologic diseases, and explores ways to prevent them. The lab belongs to the Disaster Medical Science Division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and the professor's primary appointment is at the Graduate School of Medicine.
