The lab works on medical statistics, an applied discipline that provides methodology for how to collect and analyze data in medical research, including basic research, clinical research, and epidemiology. Its main research themes are the development and evaluation of designs for clinical and epidemiological studies, the development and evaluation of statistical methods for analyzing medical data, quality management of medical research, and the use of medical databases. In Japan, the number of statisticians involved in medical research is extremely small compared with Europe and the United States, and the lab is introduced as one of the few places where one can study medical statistics. The lab also holds a concurrent appointment with the Clinical Trial Data Center at Tohoku University Hospital, where it takes part in problems arising in practice from the perspectives of statistics and information management, and also carries out joint research.

The lab uses epidemiological methods to clarify the causes of disease, and conducts research that points to measures leading to longer healthy life expectancy. In the professor's greeting, it is stated that the lab has not stopped at identifying the causes of many diseases, but has also shown the effectiveness of cancer screening and measures for extending healthy life expectancy, and has achieved their implementation in society. The same greeting states that in recent years it has become possible to conduct epidemiological studies that take into account genetic factors, detailed lifelogs, and various metabolites. The lab can analyze the large-scale cohort data it has built up over the years, as well as the data being collected through the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project.

The Division of Stem Cell Medicine (Takubo Lab) starts from hematopoietic stem cells, which produce blood, and the niche that surrounds them, and studies where, in what metabolic state, and when cells change their fate. By combining single-cell analysis, metabolic analysis, culture and gene editing of hematopoietic stem cells, bone marrow imaging, and AI, the lab investigates the principles of stem cell homeostasis, aging, and disease. Building on these findings, the lab aims to establish culture systems in which the bone marrow environment is reconstructed outside the body for hematopoietic stem cells, and to extend this work to regenerative medicine, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and disease therapies. The lab conducts research at two sites: Tohoku University in Sendai, and the Department of Hematopoietic System Research at the National Institute of Global Health and Medicine, Japan Institute for Health Security, in Tokyo.

The Global Health and Infectious Diseases Lab studies infectious disease control, including pandemic countermeasures, in collaboration with researchers around the world. In the Philippines, the lab conducts international joint research centered on respiratory infections in children, and in Zambia, centered on respiratory viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Holding that infectious disease problems can no longer be solved by medicine alone, the lab works with a broad range of researchers, including those in the humanities and social sciences, to consider what future infectious disease control should look like.

The Public Health Nursing Lab explores care and social innovation that support people in living autonomously while remaining loosely connected to one another. Its mission is to send out researchers and public health nurses who can lead and carry out national and global health policy. Its direction is interdisciplinary research that merges with other fields, and building knowledge through both theoretical research and social implementation. Graduate students include those in the Public Health Nurse Training Course and those in the Researcher Training Course.

Precision Ophthalmic Medicine Development Lab (Affiliated Center for Innovative Applied Medicine) is introduced on the website of the Department of Ophthalmology, Tohoku University School of Medicine, as the field to which an Associate Professor belongs. The Department of Ophthalmology conducts research to create new medical care for intractable eye diseases that existing treatments cannot resolve, with the aim of preventing blindness. The Professor of the department specializes in glaucoma, and the greeting message on the website states a policy of returning the results of research on developing neuroprotective treatments to clinical practice through translational research. The website describes the department as distinctive in that physicians, researchers in science, engineering, and pharmaceutical sciences, researchers from companies, and international students from overseas work in the same place and conduct research while discussing with one another.

The Medical Science Communication field studies how to engage in dialogue with diverse stakeholders, including patients and citizens, which is essential for advancing medical research. In genomic medicine, the distance is short between basic research results and their reaching clinical practice and individuals' lives, so the impact on society appears directly. The lab therefore conducts practical research, including on ethical aspects, into how patients and citizens can participate in research and how communication based on research results should be carried out.

The Maternal and Child Medical Science Lab aims to clarify, through cohort studies, the factors that influence child development. The lab participates in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), a large-scale birth cohort study led by the Ministry of the Environment, and is in charge of the study in Miyagi Prefecture. The lab also uses growth and developmental records of children born small in Miyagi Prefecture to investigate how the environment around birth, such as preterm birth, relates to future neurodevelopmental disorders.

The Epileptology Lab at Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine sets out to master epilepsy as a disease. Epilepsy is a disease in which the brain's excitation, that is, seizures, occurs repeatedly. The lab's website says that with the latest treatment, many patients can lead ordinary lives. Patients have many concerns besides seizures, and the lab says it works together with them to resolve those as well.
