Cardiovascular Medicine is a clinical department that treats diseases of the heart and blood vessels. It grew out of the former First Department of Internal Medicine, which has a history spanning more than a century. In research, it aims to elucidate the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and develop cutting-edge medical care. In education, it aims to train the people who will lead cardiovascular care in the future. In clinical practice, it serves as the "last resort" for severe cardiovascular disease, providing advanced, best-possible care. Its policy is to advance research, education, and clinical care together as one. Tohoku University has specialists who provide advanced care, including ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation, for a wide range of conditions such as ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiomyopathy.

The lab studies how the communities of microorganisms that live symbiotically in the human body (the microbiome) affect aging through the immune system. From many angles, the lab analyzes how changes in the bacteria living in the gut, mouth, and skin cause immune aging and cellular senescence, leading to a decline in tissue function. The lab's ultimate goal is to extend healthspan by regulating the microbiome and the immune system.

The lab studies systems that extract useful information from medical images such as X-ray CT and MRI to support diagnosis and treatment. The lab explores new theories and technologies using computational intelligence, including AI and machine learning, and aims to implement them as systems that support diagnosis and treatment. For example, the lab studies methods that automatically detect and distinguish lesions using deep learning models, and methods that track and predict changes in tumor position and shape from X-ray fluoroscopy images. The lab also conducts joint research with companies that develop medical devices.

The Higher Brain Dysfunction Lab studies both higher brain dysfunction and dementia, which arise after brain diseases or injuries, through patient care and research. Higher brain functions are the complex neural functions that make us human, such as attention, memory, language, visuospatial cognition, and executive function. The lab rests on three pillars: higher brain dysfunction caused by focal brain damage, dementia, and higher brain dysfunction in epilepsy. In 1994, it was founded at Tohoku University as the first clinical department in Japan specializing in this field.

The Department of Obstetrics and Fetal Pathophysiology aims to unravel the mysteries of the intrauterine environment during pregnancy, create new knowledge, and develop entirely new methods of diagnosis and treatment. The lab covers research from basic to clinical, working on artificial placentas and artificial wombs, fetal electrocardiography, and basic research in mice. In its predecessor, the Department of Biomedical Engineering for Fusion of Medicine and Engineering, the lab put great effort into developing fetal electrocardiography, which records the electrical signals of the fetal heart through the mother's abdominal wall, and succeeded in bringing it to market as a product. The lab's website lists side by side the names of Obstetrics and Fetal Pathophysiology in the Graduate School of Medicine and Near-Future Life Information Engineering in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.

The Geriatric Cognitive and Motor Dysfunction Lab is a cooperative chair of the Tohoku University Graduate School that carries out basic and clinical research on dementia and musculoskeletal diseases. Sendai Nishitaga Hospital entered into a partnership with the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and established the lab in fiscal year 2016. Disorders of cognitive function and of motor function are regarded as major obstacles to extending healthy life expectancy, and the lab works on research in the area where the two overlap. Its ultimate goal is to establish personalized medicine programs tailored to each older adult, and it says it also trains specialists by offering master's and doctoral programs.

The Disaster Psychiatry lab at Tohoku University's International Research Institute of Disaster Science studies the effects on mental health of disasters, including the Great East Japan Earthquake. It uses multifaceted approaches from basic medicine, clinical medicine, and related fields. The lab conducts basic research toward elucidating the mechanisms of, and developing treatments for, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder thought to be caused by disasters and the stress they bring. Through large-scale, ongoing surveys in disaster-affected areas, the lab also works to help build systems for mental health response during disasters.

The Cancer Molecular Target Discovery lab is part of the Cancer Life Science Department at Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, and "Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research" is added after the lab's name. The name of the lab is "Cancer Molecular Target Discovery." The faculty member is Prof. Otsu, a Visiting Professor.

The Diagnostic Imaging lab, built on three pillars of diagnostic imaging, AI, and contribution to society, conducts research to help people live better in the era of 100-year lives. Using a portable MRI, the lab screens the musculoskeletal system at sports sites, such as for baseball elbow in youth baseball. It works on AI that uses MRI images to assist diagnosis, and plans to develop AI that predicts prognosis. The lab also researches postmortem imaging (autopsy imaging), and broadens its research themes by incorporating research proposals from students.

The Brain Imaging Survey Unit is in charge of additional MRI examinations and cognitive and psychological tests in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project. It aims to clarify how constitution (genetic factors) and lifestyle affect the brain, cognitive function, and mental state. The unit conducts the "Brain and Mental Health Survey" with people who took part in the Three-Generation Cohort Study or the Community-Based Cohort Study and who want an MRI examination. From the survey results, it builds a large-scale brain imaging database, aiming to advance early diagnosis and prevention of conditions such as depression, PTSD, and dementia.
