The Disaster Public Health and Molecular Epidemiology divisions study preparedness for large-scale disasters, health promotion across the life course, and the mechanisms of multifactorial diseases. Using large-scale epidemiological surveys, the lab examines topics such as the growth of children in the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the relationship between mold and dust mites in temporary housing and allergy symptoms. As the foundation of its research, the lab conducts the Birth Three-Generation Cohort Study, a study design that is the first of its kind in the world. Using molecular epidemiology methods that analyze genome information and other data with artificial intelligence techniques, the lab searches for the causes of multifactorial diseases such as autism spectrum disorder.

Gynecologic Oncology (Miyagi Cancer Center) is a gynecologic oncology field established in the Department of Cancer Medical Science at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. The name of the field includes Miyagi Cancer Center. Prof. Yamada, a Visiting Professor, is in charge, and the field is listed among the fields of the Graduate School of Medicine.

The Medical Informatics field (Nakayama Lab) upholds “practical medical informatics” and researches information systems that are useful in healthcare settings. The lab explores hospital information systems and regional healthcare collaboration systems that are useful in clinical practice. It also works on developing Personal Health Records, building data infrastructure that supports clinical research, and using medical AI. Promoting standardization in Japan and abroad and responding to disasters are also among its challenges.

The Biological Information Analysis field is a lab that aims to understand complex biological phenomena by analyzing large-scale data. The lab handles everything in an integrated way, from experimental design through large-scale measurement to data analysis, and combines experiments, multi-omics, and computational science to approach the principles of biological regulation. It works on host dysfunction caused by cancer, the effects of daily stress on disease and aging, and the effects of using robots, avatars, and devices on the body. The lab is located at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, Tohoku University, and also has a research team at the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University.

The Medical Genetics lab searches for genes that cause hereditary diseases and studies how those diseases arise. It analyzes causative genes using next-generation sequencers, and builds and analyzes zebrafish models. Its members include certified genetic counselors from the Department of Clinical Genetics, who provide genetic counseling. Students in the Public Health and Genetic Counseling Course also belong to this lab.

The Quantum Life and Molecular Imaging Lab is one of the divisions of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. In the Graduate School of Medicine's list of divisions, it appears under the name "Quantum Life and Molecular Imaging Lab / Institute for Quantum Medical Science, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST)." The list also contains a row with the same lab name labeled "Institute for Quantum Life Science," but in this "Institute for Quantum Medical Science" row, Atsushi Tsuji and Makiko Yamada are listed as Visiting Professors. The words "quantum life" and "molecular imaging" appear side by side in the name of the division.

The Cyclotron Nuclear Medicine lab studies molecular imaging, which observes the behavior of molecules in a living body from outside the body while it is alive. Molecular imaging is a new interdisciplinary field at the boundary of medicine, engineering, biomedical engineering, and pharmaceutical sciences, and it uses methods such as positron emission tomography (PET). The lab is located in the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, where it runs the university's shared-use system while mainly carrying out clinical research using PET. As a cooperating division of the Graduate School of Medicine, it is also the site of the Molecular Imaging education course.

The Pediatric Development Lab is in charge of supporting health surveys of children who take part in the genome cohort study of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project. This project conducts a large-scale genome cohort study aimed at putting genomic medicine into practical use, and children from Miyagi Prefecture participate in it. The lab helps assess the health status of the participating children and links this to personalized prevention and medical care. The lab also aims to carry out research that uses genomic medicine to enable personalized prevention and medical care for multifactorial diseases in children.

The Radiation Biology Lab conducts basic research on radiation therapy for cancer and research on the effects of low-dose radiation on living organisms. Focusing on ATM and DNA-PK, which are DNA double-strand break repair enzymes, the lab studies radiosensitization of cancer, prediction of radiosensitivity, and radioprotection of normal tissue. The lab also aims to clarify at the molecular level how low-dose and low-dose-rate radiation causes vascular lesions such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction.

The Diabetes, Metabolism and Endocrinology Lab carries out research, clinical practice, and education on metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis. Because blood glucose levels and body weight are determined by the sum of the metabolic states of organs throughout the body, the lab investigates how organs coordinate with one another to regulate whole-body metabolism. The lab's clinical division is the Department of Diabetes and Metabolism at Tohoku University Hospital, and experience in clinical practice is the starting point of its research. The lab provides support and guidance so that every graduate of the graduate school can obtain qualification as a board-certified diabetologist.
