Taking advantage of being located inside a hospital, the lab conducts research on providing safe, high-quality drug therapy and on elucidating how diseases arise. Building on liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry as core technologies, the lab develops highly sensitive methods for measuring molecules and drugs in the body, aiming to establish early diagnostic methods for diseases and to optimize drug therapy for each individual. The lab also conducts many joint studies with other labs in the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, as well as with clinical departments and pharmacists at the university hospital. The lab is a cooperating division of Pathological Molecular Pharmaceutics in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and of Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Graduate School of Medicine.

The lab conducts pathology research on intractable diseases that incorporates cutting-edge genome-wide molecular analysis. In pancreatic cancer, the lab studies how signals involved in cancer cell proliferation stay constantly active, and searches for molecules that can be used for diagnosis and treatment. For intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, the lab examines gene mutations and explores how the tumor arises using genetically engineered mice. The lab also works on research to advance personalized treatment using organoids derived from surgically resected cancers.

The center conducts surveys and research on medical education and works to improve the quality of education at Tohoku University School of Medicine. Its work includes designing, operating, and evaluating the curriculum, and making proposals for improvement. The center also develops advanced educational programs so that students and graduates can maintain a broad perspective and spirit of inquiry and engage in self-directed learning. Through evidence-based practice and reform of medical education, it aims to train the people who will lead future healthcare.

The Dermatology Lab studies how diseases such as systemic sclerosis and skin cancer arise, and develops new treatments for them. The lab also provides clinical care as the Department of Dermatology of Tohoku University Hospital, and the professor, associate professor, and lecturer each have their own research themes. The lab's philosophy is "to train medical professionals and members of society who are truly useful to people," and it aims to contribute to community healthcare and share its research results with the world. Founded in 1907, the lab has a long history and has produced many research results on skin diseases.

The Biomarker Discovery Lab searches for genes and biomarkers associated with diseases and drug sensitivity, using biological samples such as blood collected in a large-scale biobank. Because genomic information obtained from Western populations does not always apply to Japanese people, the lab builds genome reference panels, develops SNP arrays, and searches for alleles associated with disease and drug sensitivity. In addition to samples from the Medical Megabank, a cohort of healthy individuals, the lab analyzes clinical specimens from people with diseases, working to identify disease-causing genes and discover biomarkers. By combining genetic information with omics information, the lab works toward personalized medicine that aims to improve disease prevention, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment effectiveness.

The Clinical Aging Medicine lab is a division of the brain science research department at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, and it also runs a clinical department, Geriatrics and Gerontology, at Tohoku University Hospital. The lab collects MRI images of the brains of many healthy people and conducts research using a brain imaging database. It investigates how environmental factors such as lifestyle and genetic factors affect the shape and function of the brain and cognitive ability. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Taki Lab / Geriatrics and Gerontology.”

The Organ Anatomy lab studies how changes in lipid balance inside and outside cells alter the functions of neural and immune cells. Focusing on fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs), which carry fatty acids within cells, it investigates the mechanisms underlying neurological diseases, inflammatory diseases, and tumors. The research uses mice and cultured cells.

The Neuropathophysiology and Control Lab was founded in May 2018 with the aim of developing cutting-edge treatments in neurosurgery. Working with the neurosurgery department, the lab identifies what is needed at the bedside and turns it into themes for developing new treatments. The Professor and the Associate Professor are neurosurgeons who currently perform surgery, so the environment lets students work through the whole process, from finding problems to development and clinical application. The lab belongs to both the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and the Graduate School of Medicine, and students earn a master's or doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or medicine depending on the graduate school they enter.

The Shimadzu × Tohoku University Supersulfide Life Science Co-creation Lab studies “supersulfide molecules,” in which multiple sulfur atoms are linked in a chain within a molecule. Supersulfide molecules have been found to exert antioxidant and cell-protective effects in the body, and research on them is expected to be applied to the prevention and treatment of disease. By combining Tohoku University's research on supersulfide molecules with Shimadzu's mass spectrometry technology, the lab aims to contribute to the development of drugs and foods that prevent aging. The lab's website is published within Shimadzu's website.
