The Radiation Therapy Lab conducts research aimed at further advancing radiation therapy for cancer. Radiation therapy places little burden on the body, and as patients age, it is expected to play an even larger role in cancer treatment. The lab places importance on collaborative research with the radiation oncology division at Tohoku University and with people involved in radiation therapy at other institutions. Together with the medical physics group of the Division of Radiation Oncology in the Graduate School of Medicine, the lab conducts joint research and trains medical physicists and radiation therapy technologists specializing in radiation therapy.

The Gerontological and Home Care Nursing field studies nursing that supports people in living as themselves in the environment they choose, even in old age or with illness or disability. The lab values "nursing in the place of daily life" in familiar settings such as the home, care facilities, and the community, and works to create new practical knowledge oriented toward where people live. Research themes include end-of-life care in combined nursing and small-scale multifunctional home care (kantaki), family caregivers' sleep, and verification of death at home. Undergraduate research students carry out their graduation research under the guidance of faculty members and graduate students.

The Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Lab studies nursing approaches that protect and enhance people's mental health. Its role is to develop evidence-based care by viewing people holistically from biological, social, and psychological perspectives. The subjects of its work extend beyond individuals to groups such as families, communities, and schools, as well as healthcare professionals and supporters. Its research addresses support for people living with dementia and environments that enhance resilience in adolescence.

The Image Analysis Lab studies diagnostic imaging with nuclear medicine and PET, which use radiopharmaceuticals, as well as postmortem imaging. Although nuclear medicine and PET have lower resolution than CT or MRI images, they provide "molecular imaging" information such as function and metabolism. The lab aims to develop radiological technologists who can lead nuclear medicine and PET research in Japan and abroad as scientists and educators. For nuclear medicine and PET, the lab works with the Department of Radiology at Tohoku University Hospital and the Advanced Quantum Beam Science Research Center; for postmortem imaging, it works with the Autopsy Imaging Center of the Graduate School of Medicine.

The lab focuses on breast and prostate cancer and works to elucidate the pathology of sex hormone-dependent tumors. Both are among the cancers with the highest number of patients in Japan, and their numbers continue to rise. Sex hormones play an important role in their growth and progression. The lab believes that by studying the actions of sex hormones in detail, it can build new treatment strategies and establish indicators (biomarkers) that predict how well a treatment will work. Building on pathology, which observes cells and tissues under the microscope, the lab combines experiments using disease models such as cultured cells and verifies its findings with its own hands.

The lab studies systems that extract useful information from medical images such as X-ray CT and MRI to support diagnosis and treatment. The lab explores new theories and technologies using computational intelligence, including AI and machine learning, and aims to implement them as systems that support diagnosis and treatment. For example, the lab studies methods that automatically detect and distinguish lesions using deep learning models, and methods that track and predict changes in tumor position and shape from X-ray fluoroscopy images. The lab also conducts joint research with companies that develop medical devices.

The Diagnostic Imaging lab, built on three pillars of diagnostic imaging, AI, and contribution to society, conducts research to help people live better in the era of 100-year lives. Using a portable MRI, the lab screens the musculoskeletal system at sports sites, such as for baseball elbow in youth baseball. It works on AI that uses MRI images to assist diagnosis, and plans to develop AI that predicts prognosis. The lab also researches postmortem imaging (autopsy imaging), and broadens its research themes by incorporating research proposals from students.

The Cancer Nursing lab works on developing care that improves the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients. Its main research theme is the development of a telenursing system. After discharge, patients enter their symptoms into a tablet every day, and doctors and nurses at a remote location check the data via the cloud and send advice. In education, the lab aims to train healthcare professionals with specialized knowledge and skills in cancer nursing, and to train educators and researchers who can contribute to that training.

The Adult Nursing Lab studies the relationship between aging, Helicobacter pylori infection, and gastric cancer, focusing on the underlying molecular mechanisms. The lab focuses on the processes by which the gastric mucosa atrophies and changes into intestinal metaplasia, a state resembling the intestinal mucosa. The lab uses mice chronically infected with H. pylori, genetically modified mice, and gastric organoids in its research.

The Public Health Nursing Lab explores care and social innovation that support people in living autonomously while remaining loosely connected to one another. Its mission is to send out researchers and public health nurses who can lead and carry out national and global health policy. Its direction is interdisciplinary research that merges with other fields, and building knowledge through both theoretical research and social implementation. Graduate students include those in the Public Health Nurse Training Course and those in the Researcher Training Course.
