The Medical Statistics Lab studies the development and application of statistical and mathematical methods useful for medical research. Its methods cover observational studies using existing databases, clinical trials, research synthesis that combines the results of multiple studies, and analysis of cancer registry data. It also works on methods for survival analysis and for meta-analysis, which evaluates the results of multiple studies together. In the master's program, students learn the fundamentals of medical statistics and programming skills. In the doctoral program, they aim to acquire the ability to develop new methods.

The Medical Informatics Lab studies the collection of high-quality real-world data and the acquisition of knowledge from that data. Working with the Department of Medical Informatics at the university hospital, the lab aims to build high-quality medical databases, acquire medical knowledge through machine learning, and apply it clinically. The faculty hold concurrent appointments in the Department of Medical Informatics at Osaka University Hospital and are in charge of the hospital's information system. The lab accepts students from any background, not only from medicine but also from engineering, science, and the humanities and social sciences.

The Radiology Lab conducts research and clinical practice in radiology, which captures information about the body as images and makes diagnoses from them. Divided into four specialty groups (neuroradiology, breast, chest, and abdomen), the lab handles diagnostic imaging of every part of the body, from head to toe. It also performs IVR (interventional radiology), a minimally invasive treatment that uses imaging. In its research, the lab uses the latest multidetector CT and high-field MRI installed at Osaka University Hospital, aiming to improve diagnostic performance.

The Radiation Oncology Lab conducts clinical research, medical physics research, and radiation biology research on radiation therapy, which treats cancer with radiation. In addition to brachytherapy, the lab focuses on high-precision radiation therapy such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiotherapy. As a department of a university hospital, the lab provides clinical care and conducts research, and also teaches undergraduate students, graduate students, and residents. In radiation biology, the lab conducts basic research on tumor immunity in radiation therapy and develops new treatments that enhance therapeutic effect.

The Cardiovascular Surgery Lab is one of the clinical departments that make up the surgery labs of Osaka University, and works on the surgical treatment of heart and blood vessel diseases. Since performing Japan's first successful open-heart surgery using a heart-lung machine in 1956, the lab has focused on improving surgical outcomes for valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, aortic disease, and congenital heart disease, and on developing and spreading new treatments. The 'Frontline of Treatment' section of the lab's website introduces large-vessel and minimally invasive catheter treatments that are gentle on the body, artificial hearts and heart transplantation, peripheral vascular treatment, and biodesign. Prof. Miyagawa specializes in valvular heart disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, regenerative therapy and surgical treatment for severe heart failure, and ventricular assist devices.

The lab studies a wide range of topics from basic research to clinical application, centered on lung cancer, thymic tumors, lung transplantation, and regenerative medicine. In recent years, through cancer genome analysis, AI-assisted diagnosis, and biomarker development, the lab has been advancing translational research with next-generation medicine in view. At Osaka University Hospital, thoracic surgery, respiratory medicine, and diagnostic and therapeutic radiology work together under a Respiratory Center system. In thoracic surgery, the lab also actively introduces thoracoscopic surgery and robot-assisted surgery.

The Gastroenterological Surgery I Lab aims to unravel the mysteries of cancer development and characteristics and to link them to treatment. The lab's website introduces clinical care and research as the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, and its list of members covers the whole department. In clinical care, the department treats cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, and also provides surgical treatment such as liver transplantation, pancreas transplantation, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The Gastroenterological Surgery II Lab belongs to the Department of Surgery at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, and conducts research and education in surgery that treats diseases of the digestive organs by operation. The lab's website introduces the whole department as "Surgery, Gastroenterological Surgery," and is not a page for Gastroenterological Surgery II alone. In clinical care, the department treats malignant tumors of the esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, and also provides surgical treatment such as liver transplantation, pancreas transplantation, and inflammatory bowel disease. The staff are divided into fields such as upper gastrointestinal, lower gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary-pancreatic, and chemotherapy, and provide clinical care in each. The department's greeting from 2019 states that it is also actively conducting clinical research with an eye to future medicine, such as cancer immunotherapy and regenerative medicine.

The Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery specializes in surgery of the breast and thyroid, providing clinical care and also conducting research. Breast cancer is the mainstay of the department's treatment, and the department's main theme is the application of genetic diagnosis to breast cancer care. The department pursues translational research, solving problems found in the clinic through research. In the doctoral program, students conduct a wide range of basic and clinical research on breast cancer.

The Pediatric Surgery lab is the pediatric surgery department of Osaka University, engaging in clinical care, research, and education as the pediatric surgery division of the university hospital. It covers a broad range of pediatric surgery, including neonatal surgery, fetal therapy, endoscopic surgery, and transplantation medicine. The lab values a cycle in which insights gained from patients lead to research, and the results are then returned to clinical care. Research is carried out in both clinical and basic research.
