Ikuo Suzuki, Professor
0 student voices
The lab studies the mechanisms by which features unique to humans, not found in other animals, arise. By combining evolutionary genomics with stem cell technology, it seeks to uncover the origins of what makes us human at the molecular and cellular levels. Humans acquired a huge brain and high cognitive abilities, but they also bear an evolutionary cost: a susceptibility to psychiatric and neurological disorders and cancer. The lab belongs to the Division of Brain and Neural Engineering in the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences.

Takanori Isobe, Professor
0 student voices
The Isobe Lab studies next-generation security foundations with cryptography at its core. The lab advances the design of cryptography and the security evaluation of cryptographic systems in actual use, from both theoretical and implementation perspectives. With the goal of putting research results into practice in society, the lab collaborates with industry, standardization bodies, and the open-source software (OSS) community. Each student has an independent research theme and advances it through discussions with their advisors and fellow researchers.

Naoki Wakamiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Wakamiya Lab studies new information and communication technologies by learning from the mechanisms of living organisms. Information and communication systems grow larger and more complex every year, and unexpected situations can cause their performance to drop drastically or stop altogether. The lab therefore works on Bio-ICT, which applies the highly scalable, adaptable, and robust mechanisms of living organisms to information and communication technology. Rather than imitating the outward structure or behavior of organisms, the lab takes the mathematical models behind them as its object of study.

Tatsuhiro Tsuchiya, Professor
0 student voices
The Dependability Engineering Lab conducts research in the field of dependable computing. The lab also has a strong interest in related fields such as software engineering. Its work includes software testing and verification and the reliability evaluation of systems. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Dependability Engineering Lab."

Hirozumi Yamaguchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamaguchi Lab conducts research on technologies that benefit cities and people, centered on real-world sensing, digital twins, and cyber-physical systems (CPS). The lab collects real-world data from LiDAR, cameras, wireless sensing devices, robots, and other sources, and uses it for AI-based analysis and prediction. Its target areas include smart cities, mobility and transportation, disaster mitigation and prevention, smart agriculture, and space and satellite technologies. The lab is introduced as the Mobile Computing Group in the Department of Information Networking, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology.

Yoshinobu Kawahara, Professor
0 student voices
The Kawahara Lab studies machine learning, the foundational field that underpins AI technologies spreading rapidly through society and industry. The lab explores new principles, algorithms, and models of machine learning, and applies the results to a wide range of problems in science and engineering. Recently, it has been working on further advancing deep learning, representation learning, and reinforcement learning, among other topics. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the Machine Learning Systems Theory Group.

Yuki Koizumi, Professor
0 student voices
The Koizumi Lab aims to innovate the Internet and studies networking technologies that combine novelty with practicality. The lab develops technologies for data center networks used to generate large-scale AI models, and for carrying out distributed machine learning securely and quickly. It also works on security-related technologies such as cyberattack detection and anonymous communication, and, to implement these technologies inside the network, puts particular effort into programming ultra-high-speed network hardware. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the Advanced Network Architecture Group, and it became the Koizumi Lab in February 2026.

Shigeto Senoo, Professor
0 student voices
Senoo Lab tackles problems in biology and medicine, building on bioinformatics and information science. The lab studies methods for analyzing a wide range of life science data, including single-cell omics, spatial omics, microscopy video images of cells, and biosignals such as EEG and ECG. Although the subject matter is biology, the main research methods come from information science, and the lab's website says that limited knowledge of biology is not a problem. Students can also take part in collaborative research with other fields, such as medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, and science.

Shinji Kusumoto, Professor
0 student voices
Kusumoto Lab studies software engineering. Software engineering is an academic field that deals with various techniques for developing high-quality software at low cost and on schedule, and for maintaining it efficiently. The research areas page lists topics such as software testing, educational technology, automated program repair, code clones, and software estimation.

Fumihiko Ino, Professor
0 student voices
Ino Lab studies high-performance computing technologies broadly, from basic theory to application software. Its subjects include GPUs, clusters, grid computing, and medical image processing. Through joint and commissioned research with companies and universities, the lab aims to train people who can work on the front lines of software development.
