The Cardiovascular Metabolism Lab studies the original functions of adipocytes (fat cells) and how their dysregulation leads to obesity. Aiming to overcome lifestyle-related diseases, the lab focuses on the pathology of obese adipose tissue and the functions of adipocytokines secreted by adipocytes. The lab regards adipocytes as cells that not only store energy but also regulate their own functions through their own nutrient signals, and it works to clarify these mechanisms. The lab belongs to the Department of Pathophysiological Information Science in the Division of Health Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University.

The Clinical Neurophysiology Lab studies the mechanisms of diseases of the brain, nerves, and muscles, centering on physiological methods such as electrophysiology and also using genetic analysis. The lab is working to clarify disease mechanisms using patient-derived iPS cells, and it also conducts research on treatments, mainly for rare diseases caused by ion channel abnormalities. The lab also runs a patient registry (a register of patients) and is building the foundation needed for developing treatments. The master's program in the Division of Health Sciences has a genetic counseling course, through which the lab trains certified genetic counselors.

Centering on ophthalmology, the Regenerative Medicine and Developmental Biology Lab studies regenerative medicine for the cornea, eye development, photoreceptor pathology, and the causative genes of hereditary diseases. The lab belongs to the Department of Biopathological Information Science, in the Medical Technology Sciences field of the Division of Health Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University. In its research, the lab uses human iPS cells, zebrafish, model mice, and other models. Prof. Tsujikawa is a physician who has treated patients and studied diseases in ophthalmology, and in the lab he also teaches anatomy and clinical chemistry in lectures and practical training.

The Pathogenic Microbiology and Microbiome Lab conducts research and education in microbiology to contribute to the eradication of infectious diseases and the reduction of their threat. At the molecular level, the lab investigates the virulence of pathogenic bacteria such as streptococci, and how changes in the microbiome of the gut, skin, and oral cavity relate to disease. In education, the lab teaches pathogenic microbiology to undergraduate and graduate students in health sciences, aiming to train researchers and healthcare professionals who can act on their own to solve problems related to infectious diseases. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Okamoto Lab".

The Molecular Biochemistry Lab conducts research on the pathological biochemistry of glycans. The diseases it targets are mainly cancer and digestive diseases. Because glycan structures vary between cells and tissues, glycans are also called the "faces of cells," and they are used clinically as disease markers such as tumor markers. Using the latest glycan analysis technology, the lab aims to develop new diagnostic and testing methods for digestive diseases that are considered difficult to treat.

The Molecular Pathology Lab studies the nature of cancer, in the hope that its findings will lead to better cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through both cell experiments and research on clinical materials, meaning specimens from patients, the lab aims to attack cancer from two sides. The professor likens cancer tissue to a city invaded by a foreign organism. The lab believes that molecular biology techniques that analyze DNA, RNA, and epigenetics are useful for investigating the character of cancer.

The Preventive Diagnostics Lab belongs to the Biological Pathophysiology and Information Science course in the field of Medical Laboratory Science, in the Department of Health Sciences of the School of Medicine at Osaka University and the Division of Health Sciences of its Graduate School of Medicine. The faculty consists of a professor and a lecturer, and the lab has doctoral and master's students and fourth-year undergraduates. Lecturer Arakawa is also affiliated with the Twin Research Center.
