Yilang Xiang, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Xiang studies the history of modern architecture and modern housing, as well as urban history and the formation of cities. The main subject is the relationship between modernization under colonial rule and architecture and cities in East Asia in the first half of the 20th century. Focusing on Dalian in northeastern China, the lab investigates suburban residential areas, housing reform, mixed-use buildings that include apartments, and the activities of architects. The lab also conducts field surveys in former suburban residential areas of Dalian.

Toshiaki Kimura, Professor
0 student voices
Kimura Lab studies structural design methods that use mechanics, optimization, and digital technology to realize resource-efficient, safe buildings. The lab works on methods for generating the forms of long-span structures and on analyzing their structural performance. Its research themes also include developing structural members and systems using structural optimization and digital technology, and reverse engineering of modern architecture. The lab welcomes motivated students who are interested in structures, construction methods, and information processing technology.

Hidetoki Hidetoki, Professor
0 student voices
The Hidetoki Lab studies the full life cycle of tests, from how questions are written to how tests are administered, scored, evaluated, and used, in fields known as educational measurement and psychometrics. Based on actual examinees' response data, the lab analyzes test questions (item analysis) and verifies item-writing guidelines. Recently, the lab has been developing item-writing guidelines grounded in empirical study and test administration methods that fit the needs of those who administer tests, and it also conducts research on entrance examinations and on psychology in general. The research themes of past students have been wide-ranging, covering nursing, mental health, personality, motivation, and learning strategies, and students basically choose their own themes.
Haruhiko Mitsunaga, Associate Professor
0 student voices
In this lab, Associate Professor Haruhiko Mitsunaga specializes in psychometrics, educational measurement, and test theory. The research themes are practical research on applying item response theory (IRT) to tests, and research on item response models and their application to actual tests. Currently, the lab is examining a method that uses statistical techniques called cognitive diagnostic models to capture the fine-grained aspects of students' academic ability, so that teachers can use the results to improve their lessons.
Motoyuki Nakaya, Professor
0 student voices
In this lab, Professor Motoyuki Nakaya studies educational psychology, in particular the motivational processes of children, students, and university students, and the classroom and cultural environments that support them. Rather than viewing learning merely as an intellectual activity, the lab is interested in the mechanisms of learning and motivation that are formed socially and contextually. In recent years, the lab has focused on classrooms where diverse children, including children with roots in other countries, learn together, and has conducted longitudinal surveys in elementary schools, among other work.
Ai Mizokawa, Associate Professor
0 student voices
In this lab, Associate Professor Ai Mizokawa specializes in cognitive developmental psychology. Under the themes of understanding one's own and others' mental states and the development of communication, the lab conducts empirical research mainly with young children and school-age children. Currently, through surveys of young children, school-age children, and their caregivers, the lab is examining how adults teach children about emotions and how children's emotion understanding develops.
Shinji Yamagata, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Personality Lab studies the measurement of various individual differences such as personality, intelligence, and social attitudes, their development and change, and their effects on behavior and adjustment. Personality psychology is a research field that seeks to clarify "the uniqueness of each individual" scientifically. In recent years, the lab has also been developing a new method for measuring the trait of intellectual humility that is less affected by response bias.
Jir Takai, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Jir Takai's lab studies social psychology, cultural psychology, and intercultural and interpersonal communication. The lab asks whether the image of the Japanese portrayed in traditional Nihonjinron (theories of Japanese identity) still holds true today, and uses empirical methods to clarify the characteristics of present-day Japanese people. Its main theme is interpersonal communication competence, the ability to interact smoothly with others. The lab conducts surveys comparing Japanese and American university students, and is developing VR training for students going to study abroad.
Tasuku Igarashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Igarashi Lab studies phenomena produced by the dynamics between the human mind and the social environment, using approaches from social psychology, social network analysis, and computational social science. Its main theme is "how the way people relate to society is influenced by their interpersonal environment," and it examines how people behave within social networks. In recent years, the lab has been working on the relationship between loneliness and social connections. For those who wish to go on to graduate school, the lab's website asks them to make an appointment with Prof. Igarashi in advance.
