The lab studies the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive organs, including the liver, gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, and pancreas. It has five specialty groups (liver, endoscopy, chemotherapy, biliary-pancreatic, and inflammatory bowel disease), and each group is engaged in clinical care and research. From the perspective of clinicians, the lab places emphasis on clarifying how diseases arise, developing new treatments, and generating new clinical evidence. In graduate school, each student works on a research topic together with a supervisor and writes it up as an original paper.

The lab studies the mechanisms and treatments of heart and blood vessel diseases, such as ischemia, heart failure, and arrhythmia. It combines questions that arise from clinical practice with basic research that digs down to the molecular and genetic level. Hokkaido University Hospital is the only heart transplant facility in Hokkaido, and it provides advanced medical care such as catheter-based treatment and treatment of severe heart failure. At the weekly research conference, graduate students present the progress of their research, and students are free to attend.

The Hematology Lab studies blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma, and their treatment. While valuing the care of each individual patient, the lab's mission is to advance clinical and basic research at a level that contributes to the development of medicine worldwide. Basic research is divided into three groups: leukemia genetics, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy, and lymphoma. Students from the Department of Medicine have presented their research at academic conferences and received awards.

The Cancer Genomic Medicine Lab conducts research on cancer genomic medicine, which examines genetic changes in cancer and applies them to treatment. Its research covers cancer genome analysis, genomic abnormalities and epigenomic changes, the development of new biomarkers, and molecular targeted therapy. Professor Kinoshita serves as director of the Cancer Genetic Diagnosis Division at Hokkaido University Hospital, which is responsible for cancer genomic medicine there. The Cancer Genetic Diagnosis Division analyzes cancer genes relevant to treatment and provides information on the drugs best suited to each patient.

The Infectious Diseases Lab studies the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, including HIV infection. Its research themes include new treatments for HIV infection, the diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic infections, and comprehensive methods for analyzing pathogens. The lab also works on estimating the number of COVID-19 cases and on the effect of antimicrobial stewardship team (AST) interventions on patient survival outcomes. Professor Endo serves as director of the Infection Control Department at Hokkaido University Hospital and as director of its HIV Care Support Center.

The Radiation Oncology Lab studies how to treat cancer with radiation. The lab conducts research on proton therapy at the Proton Beam Therapy Center of Hokkaido University Hospital, and on high-precision radiotherapy such as stereotactic body radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. Working with medical physicists and basic medical researchers, the lab carries out its research as the radiation therapy division of the Global Center for Biomedical Science and Engineering. The lab is in charge of the lecture "Radiation Oncology" for fourth-year medical students and of clinical clerkships, and visits are welcome.

The Diagnostic Radiology Lab studies diagnostic imaging, which finds disease using CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, and other images, and image-guided treatment (interventional radiology, IVR). Working with basic science and engineering researchers, the lab aims for highly original research that could be a world first from Hokkaido University. In each area, including the brain, heart, pelvis, and abdomen, the lab works on new imaging methods, new analysis methods, and applications of AI. The lab accepts sixth-year medical students for long-term clerkships and provides consistent education from undergraduate training to specialist training.

The Respiratory and Circulatory Innovative Research Lab is an endowed division established in 2020 to study diseases of the blood vessels and blood flow in the lungs (pulmonary circulatory diseases). Focusing mainly on pulmonary hypertension, which the Department of Respiratory Medicine has long treated and studied, its mission is to develop those results further. The lab also provides care and conducts research on diseases that involve both breathing and circulation, such as sarcoidosis.

The lab is a surgical department that treats cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, such as the colon, and of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, as well as liver transplantation and surgical diseases in children. The lab conducts clinical and basic research based on problems and questions that arise in surgical practice. Its goal is to train “Academic Surgeons,” surgeons who have acquired the ability to solve problems through basic research early in their careers. The lab hosts clinical clerkships for medical students (the all-department clinical clerkship and the elective clinical clerkship).

The lab studies the surgical treatment of difficult-to-treat cancers such as esophageal, gastric, biliary tract, and pancreatic cancer. Its mission is to contribute to the greatest happiness of patients by reforming surgical care based on basic and clinical research. The whole lab also works on developing endoscopic surgery, which puts less strain on the body, and on “surgical education,” the study of how to train surgeons' skills. The lab is mainly in charge of the all-department clinical clerkship (general surgery) for the Department of Medicine, and also holds “Somei Juku,” a surgical skills training course for medical students.
