The lab studies the mechanisms of viral infections that are difficult to remove from the body. Focusing on retroviruses such as HTLV-1 and HIV-1, the lab works to elucidate "latent and persistent infection," in which viruses stay hidden in the body and the infection continues. By combining single-cell analysis, next-generation sequencing, and digital PCR, the lab investigates the interaction between pathogens and hosts and the mechanisms by which disease arises. A new professor took up the post in April 2026, and the lab started under a new structure.

The lab studies how various environmental factors affect people's health. Its scope is broad, ranging from global environmental issues such as climate change, air pollution, Asian dust, heat waves, and heavy rain, to local healthcare problems. The lab uses environmental epidemiology methods that combine large-scale clinical data with environmental data obtained from ground observations and satellite remote sensing. The lab also conducts epidemiological research on health and welfare for older adults, in particular on the symptoms that accompany dementia.

The lab conducts research to protect and improve the physical and mental health of all people living in society, from fetuses and newborns to older adults. Public health rests on three pillars: building social systems, research that provides the evidence for them, and practice toward better living. To make these three work well in communities, workplaces, and schools, the lab carries out projects such as health surveys in collaboration with towns in Hokkaido and follow-up studies of older adults.

The lab studies forensic diagnostics, which establishes the cause of death, the time since death, and injuries and asphyxia. The research centers on testing for drugs and poisons with mass spectrometers and on postmortem imaging diagnosis with CT scanners. This equipment is also shared with other clinical departments at Hokkaido University Hospital and used in their clinical work and research. Members come from diverse specialties, including pathology specialists, dentists, veterinarians, and people trained in chemistry.

The lab conducts research to improve future healthcare and long-term care policy. It aims to produce the evidence that underpins policymaking and to engage with society, as well as to train the people who will support future health policy. Its work includes evaluating policies using administrative data such as insurance claims, and studying healthcare and long-term care delivery systems, cancer control, and health technology assessment.

The lab studies medical education, which is how physicians are trained. The Center for Medical Education and Internationalization, which supports medical education as a whole, is positioned as a unit for research and development within the social medicine departments. The lab develops teaching methods, teaching materials, and assessment methods, and studies factors that influence students' learning behavior and physicians' career choices. It supervises the research of master's and doctoral students.

The Medical Safety Management Lab studies how organizations respond in order to provide safe medical care. Its research themes also include methods for training the staff who are responsible for medical safety (patient safety managers) and the standardization of methods for investigating medical accidents. The faculty members belong to the department responsible for medical safety at Hokkaido University Hospital.

The Health Data Science Lab studies methods for using real-world data in research. Its work includes research that considers data acquisition from an informatics perspective, as well as research on data management, study design, and analysis methods. Prof. Ito serves as director of the Hokkaido University Hospital Data Science Center. The center works to ensure the reliability of data from clinical research and clinical trials, and to make use of data from the hospital information system.

The Clinical Genetics and Medical Ethics Lab studies medical care related to genetics and the genetic counseling that supports it. To pursue research and education, the Department of Clinical Genetics at Hokkaido University Hospital joined the Graduate School of Medicine as a lab in April 2023. The lab collaborates with the hospital's various clinical departments to provide genetic medicine, and also aims to improve genetic medicine across Hokkaido through remote genetic counseling using ICT. Since the 2024 academic year, it has run a program to train certified genetic counselors in the Public Health course of the Master's program in the Division of Medical Science.

The lab studies a wide range of respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension, respiratory infections, bronchial asthma, and COPD. The lab places importance on resolving questions that arise in clinical practice through research, and it links clinical research with basic research. The lab is divided into two groups, non-oncology and oncology, and in lung cancer it is also advancing the development of molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Students can take part in research activities even while they are still undergraduates.
