The Cardiovascular Echo Lab studies methods of examining heart and blood vessel diseases using ultrasound (echo). Its aim is to train people who are skilled in the practice of ultrasound examination and who can also work as researchers in ultrasound medicine. The lab carries out education and research in collaboration with technologists and physicians from the Division of Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine, the Ultrasound Center, and the Echocardiography Room at Hokkaido University Hospital. Alongside their graduate research, graduate students receive instruction in the clinical setting on examination technique and image interpretation.

Under the keyword "microbial interactions," the lab studies at the cellular and molecular levels how bacteria continue to infect cells. Using primitive environmental chlamydiae that live inside amoebae, the lab investigates how pathogenic bacteria have adapted to humans. The lab also studies how the pathogenic Chlamydia trachomatis multiplies inside infected cells.

The Cellular Metabolic Chemistry Lab (Advanced Lipid Analysis Laboratory) uses its own original techniques to analyze lipids, and substances involved in lipid metabolism, that cannot be analyzed in ordinary clinical laboratories. Lipid peroxides involved in arteriosclerosis and inflammation, plasmalogens involved in brain function, and antioxidants that enter the body from food are present in small amounts and are unstable, which makes them difficult to analyze. The lab has developed its own evaluation methods using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, antibodies, cultured cells, and model animals, and has built up a system for analysis. The lab carries out joint research with companies in food, pharmaceuticals, and clinical testing as well as with other research institutions, and also works on developing foods that improve lipid metabolism.

The Pathological and Immunological Laboratory Science Lab uses methods from pathology and immunology to clarify the causes of diseases and to develop ways of evaluating disease conditions. For hard-to-treat diseases such as autoimmune diseases, the lab aims to create new evaluation methods and new treatments. The lab began in 2008 as the Pathological Laboratory Science Lab, and in 2015 it merged with the Immunological Laboratory Science Lab to become the present lab. The faculty members also teach pathological laboratory science and immunological laboratory science to undergraduate and graduate students.

The Blood Regeneration and Regulation Lab studies how blood cells, especially platelets, are produced in the bone marrow. The lab focuses on megakaryocytes, the cells that give rise to platelets, and on the bone marrow environment that surrounds them. It also works on developing bone marrow organoids, which recreate bone marrow through cell culture, and on genetic analysis of hereditary blood coagulation disorders.

The Laboratory Test Development Lab analyzes lipids and lipoproteins in blood to study the mechanisms and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. It also aims to find substances that serve as markers of disease and to develop useful clinical laboratory tests and analytical methods. In joint research with companies in Hokkaido, the lab uses locally produced ingredients to study how foods help maintain health. The lab is part of Professor Hui Shuping's group, which holds a monthly meeting in English to report on research progress.

Tamotsu Kamishima, Professor

The Kamishima Lab studies diagnostic imaging, which diagnoses disease from images such as X-ray radiographs, ultrasound, CT, and MRI. The lab aims to extract clinically useful information from images as objectively and efficiently as possible. Using multiple imaging modalities, it works on numerically evaluating inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and the changes by which bones and joints are destroyed. The lab carries out its research in collaboration with physicians and radiological technologists inside and outside the university, as well as researchers in medical physics and engineering.

The Medical Image Analysis Lab studies medical AI and medical image analysis. The lab applies artificial intelligence techniques to medical images and works on developing technologies that support diagnosis. Its research themes cover many parts of the body and many types of examinations, including the brain, heart, chest, skeleton, and nuclear medicine. The lab also works on teaching and developing MATLAB programming, which underpins medical image analysis.

Hisanori Fukunaga, Professor

The Fukunaga Lab studies the effects of radiation on human health from medical and biological perspectives. Radiation is useful in medicine and other fields, but exposure also carries risks such as cancer, which is why it is called a "double-edged sword." In particular, the lab examines the effects of radiation on reproduction and on the next generation, focusing on how they relate to the spatial distribution and timing of exposure. The lab was established in April 2022 and is in charge of education for the Radiological Science and Technology Division and the Graduate School of Health Sciences.

The Brain Function Measurement Lab studies brain function using magnetoencephalography (MEG). A MEG system measures the magnetic fields generated by neural activity, making it possible to examine where and how the brain is working without harming the body. The main themes are memory, communication, and music perception, and the lab also conducts research using a new type of MEG system that does not use liquid helium. The lab has collaborated with research institutions in Japan and abroad, including Aalto University in Finland.
