The Interfacial Energy Process Lab (Nohira Lab) is an electrochemistry lab at the Institute of Advanced Energy. Aiming to solve energy problems, the lab conducts new research based on electrochemistry. Using molten salts and ionic liquids, the lab works on CO2 capture and utilization, the production and recycling of energy materials and functional materials, and the development of safe rechargeable batteries. Lab visits are accepted at any time.

The Electrical Information Systems Lab researches the building of systems that integrate energy engineering, information engineering, and control engineering, along with the nonlinear science and data science that underlie them. Its aim is to establish a theory for extracting, as information, the mathematical structure hidden in the complex dynamics that occur at many scales in the real world. Based on the extracted information, the lab builds systems and devices with new functions. Its research methods range from theory to numerical computation, experiments, and field demonstrations.

The Spatiotemporal Sensing Lab (Biological Function Engineering Lab) studies the remarkable functions of living organisms using cutting-edge measurement technology and applies the findings to medicine and welfare. It focuses in particular on the human nervous system, measuring, analyzing, and imaging its function and structure noninvasively to investigate how the brain processes information at a high level. Its research is wide-ranging, from measuring signals with magnetic sensors to computer-based analysis of sound, images, and brain signals.

The Intelligent Circuit Design Lab uses the mathematics of AI and networks to realize new types of circuits, establish design methods for them, and advance AI itself. Electric circuits are used to realize a wide range of functions based on physical phenomena. The Internet is a global-scale circuit that carries information on electromagnetic phenomena, and power electronics achieves its functions through the physics of new devices such as SiC and GaN.

The Optical Functional Device Engineering Lab (Funato Lab) works on the emergence and elucidation of new physical properties based on the interaction between light and matter, and on optical devices and applications of light that make use of them. By controlling nanostructures, the lab aims to develop the ultimate light-emitting material, one that emits light in any desired color, at any desired size, and in any desired location, with 100% efficiency. The lab also works on the fundamental optical properties and materials that underpin solid-state lighting, as well as applications in biology and medicine.

The Applied Digital Engineering Lab conducts broad research on the analysis and design of dynamical systems, using methods of mathematical engineering centered on control theory and optimization theory. Recently, the lab has been focusing in particular on building the foundational technologies needed to guarantee the reliability and stability of machine learning and deep learning algorithms and neural networks. The lab actively carries out joint research with research institutions and companies in Japan and with research institutions overseas, aiming to develop researchers and engineers who can succeed internationally.

The Automatic Control Engineering Lab (the Hagiwara Lab) studies the theory of system control and its applications. Control is the technology of keeping the motion of things in a desired state and making them follow changes in a target, and it is essential for making products and equipment work properly. How far the power of hardware can be exploited depends on the control strategy, and the role of system control theory is to present general theory that makes possible the best control approaching those limits.

The System Creation Lab studies next-generation wireless human sensing technology that fuses radio waves and AI. Every day, people unconsciously emit a vast amount of information from the body, such as breathing, heartbeat, posture, gestures, facial expressions, and changes in emotion. However, the human body has a complex shape, moves constantly, and changes depending on the environment, so measuring and understanding people accurately is not easy.

The Electromagnetic Energy Engineering Lab studies the theory and applications of computational electromagnetics. The shift from engine-powered cars to motor-driven vehicles and the use of renewable energy are advancing worldwide. As key technologies for designing and developing electrical and electronic devices suited to these trends, the lab studies the mathematics of electromagnetic fields and electrical and electronic materials, and computer analysis methods based on them.
