The Human-Information-Technology Lab (HIT Lab) studies interaction among people, information, and technology. The lab regards technology not as a mere tool but as a medium that connects people with one another and with information. Based on an understanding of each individual's behavior, cognition, and emotions, it designs interactions that support connection, learning, and participation, aiming to support people's agency and growth. Its research combines experiments, behavioral observation in the laboratory and in real-world settings, and statistical and computational analysis.

The Behavioral Ecology and Evolutionary Ecology Lab studies the diversity and evolution of behavior and ecology in arthropods, mainly mites. Using the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and Stigmaeopsis spider mites, among others, the lab investigates behaviors such as male reproductive tactics and how mites excrete inside their nests. The lab also conducts research on the processes by which new species arise, including reproductive isolation, in which closely related populations become unable to interbreed. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Sato Lab."

The Conservation Ecology Lab studies insects living in satoyama (traditional managed village landscapes), especially bees, covering everything from basic ecology to agricultural applications. Satoyama is an environment that people have maintained by managing it for their own livelihoods, and a wide variety of organisms live there in complex relationships with one another. Pollination of crops by flower-visiting insects is one example of the role insects play in ecosystems, and it is also essential for the reproduction of many wild plants. Undergraduate and graduate students each pursue their own themes, and they also work on a variety of insects other than bees.

The lab studies root nodule symbiosis, which forms between legumes and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Nitrogen is a nutrient essential to living things, and plants have various mechanisms for obtaining it that suit the environment where they grow. The research rests on two pillars: how root nodule symbiosis is regulated in response to environmental change, and what molecular evolution gave rise to it. Projects that apply findings from basic research are also underway.

The Crop Science Lab studies how stress in the cultivation environment affects crop quality, focusing mainly on tomato. Tomato flavor is determined by three components: sugars, organic acids, and amino acids. The lab analyzes genes involved in regulating the metabolism of these components in the fruit. Research topics include sugar accumulation in fruit, tolerance to salt stress, the timing of flowering, and the transport of assimilates in the stem. The lab's website is titled "Crop Science Research Field, Matsukura Lab" and introduces the research of Prof. Matsukura's group.

The Plant Breeding Lab studies theories and techniques for crop improvement and the development of breeding materials, focusing on melon, cucumber, squash, and amaranth. Centered on fieldwork such as cultivation in the field, observation, and trait evaluation, the lab also conducts molecular biology experiments and computational analysis of genome data. The lab aims to return its research results to society quickly as practical breeding techniques and breeding materials. The lab is recruiting undergraduate and graduate students, and lab tours are accepted at any time.

The Plant Genetic Information Analysis Lab studies how gene activity is regulated through the plant epigenome. The lab investigates epigenome regulation of traits important in agriculture and of pollination and fertilization, aiming to develop new breeding technologies that use the epigenome. Using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the lab studies heterosis (hybrid vigor), in which a hybrid made by crossing two lines grows better than both parents. The lab is one of the research groups in the Gene Research Division of the Tsukuba Plant Innovation Research Center.

Tomoki Mihara, Assistant Professor
1 student voices
The Mihara Lab studies derived rigid geometry, p-adic functional analysis, discrete optimization, and natural language processing. It belongs to the Algebra Group of the Mathematics Degree Program and is also assigned to the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research. The lab also reports, in papers and presentations, on research that uses p-adic numbers for data analysis and word embeddings.

Hajime Ono, Professor
1 student voices
The Ono Lab studies differential geometry, particularly Riemannian metrics and the problem of their existence. It investigates whether canonical metrics exist on spaces with geometric structures, such as Kähler manifolds and Sasaki manifolds. The lab also works on the research topic "Einstein equations with matter fields and Kähler geometry." In the Mathematics Degree Program, it belongs to the Geometry Group.

Motoo Tange, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Tange Lab studies low-dimensional topology. The lab's website lists Dehn surgery, 4-manifolds, and Heegaard Floer homology as research topics. In addition to research, Associate Professor Tange teaches university courses, does outreach such as visits to junior high schools, high schools, and universities, and writes articles for general-audience magazines.
