The Multi-Perceptual Media Processing Lab studies media information processing technologies based on human perceptual characteristics. Centered on images and video, the lab studies perceptual media from the perspectives of analysis, compression, protection, understanding, and representation, building on signal processing and machine learning. Perceptual media equipped with functions suited to their purpose and usage environment are called "multi-perceptual media," and the lab studies technologies for them. The lab also welcomes joint research and technical consultation with companies and research institutions.

The Applied Mathematical Systems Lab studies the modeling, control, and data analysis of a wide variety of systems using mathematical approaches. The lab places importance on considering the essential characteristics of its subject and on building accurate models and problem formulations. Its goal is to establish a theoretical framework for modeling and design that realizes robust cyber-physical systems, and to apply it to real systems. In addition to individual progress meetings, the lab holds reading seminars on the literature on systems and control, optimization, signal processing, and related topics.

The Mathematical Informatics Lab studies information modeling and algorithms using mathematical methods. Using mathematical methods, the lab handles a wide range of phenomena in nature, life, and society, as well as computer-based information such as media and knowledge, and explores methods for analyzing, searching, generating, and reconstructing them. The lab mainly studies numerical analysis and mathematical software, and is commonly known as "MMALab." The Numerical Computation Group holds its lab seminar every Thursday, and the Mathematical Media Informatics Group holds its lab seminar every Wednesday.

The Systems Mathematics Lab carries out a wide range of research on mathematical optimization and algorithms. Once a model is built that expresses conditions and requirements as equations, an optimization algorithm outputs the best answer. By devising better models, designing fast algorithms, and combining both approaches, the lab does research aimed at solving problems ranging from engineering to economics and management. The research page introduces topics such as the stable marriage problem, the simplex method, and railway timetable optimization.

Frog Lab studies a variety of animals, starting with frogs, by combining mathematics and experiments. The lab collects behavioral data through field surveys and laboratory experiments, then uses mathematical equations to model the mechanisms behind the phenomena. Its goal is to discover previously unknown behaviors of living organisms and apply them to engineering. The lab welcomes students who want to study animal behavior based on informatics and mathematical sciences, as well as students who want to learn informatics and mathematical sciences based on biology.

The Physical Information Systems Lab asks how far the limits of observing natural phenomena extend, and studies a wide range of natural phenomena. In considering the limits of information processing, the lab holds that it is necessary to clarify what can be done, and how, under constraints, and it regards quantum information science and precision measurement science as its means of doing so. Undergraduate students at the University of Tsukuba are accepted for graduation research from the College of Information Science in the School of Informatics. Graduate students apply to the Degree Program in Information Science and Engineering in the Degree Programs in Systems and Information Engineering.

The High-Efficiency Custom Circuit Design Engineering Lab studies new computing architectures that use reconfigurable integrated circuits (FPGAs). By explicitly building reconfigurability into systems and applications, the lab aims to improve reliability and to optimize power consumption relative to computational performance. Research themes include autonomous flight of micro drones and immersive displays with eye tracking. In April 2026, the lab started as an independent lab, spun out from the FPGA team of the HPCS Lab.

The Edge Computing Lab studies computer science with a focus on hardware. The lab is interested in developing embedded systems into technologies that can be used in society, as well as in mechanisms for next-generation high-speed computing and high-speed communication. It is also interested in IoT and mobile applications, and pays particular attention to converging technologies in information science that target people.

The Quantum Computation Theory Lab studies quantum information science, quantum computational complexity theory, and quantum algorithms. Prof. Takahashi's page lists quantum computation, computational complexity theory, and cryptography as areas of interest. Prof. Takahashi is a full-time faculty member of the College of Information Science, and is listed as a faculty member who can serve as a supervisor in the Computer Science Degree Program at the graduate level.

The Igarashi Lab studies data-driven science, which extracts the rules hidden behind natural science data from fields such as materials science, disaster prevention science, and neuroscience. Using machine learning methods such as sparse modeling and Gaussian processes, the lab conducts joint research with universities, companies, and national research institutes. The lab places at the center of its research sparse modeling, which extracts information on the premise that the important explanatory variables are few (sparse). The lab was founded in March 2020. The information on its website dates from around 2020.
