The Diagnostic Pathology Lab studies a variety of organs, including the breast, adrenal gland, and lung, with "hormones and cancer" as its keywords. The lab's research is based on pathology, the field that clarifies the causes and mechanisms of disease. The lab analyzes histopathological specimens in detail and verifies the findings and hypotheses obtained using methods such as cell culture and animal models. The lab also actively carries out collaborative research with other groups.

As the pediatric surgery group within the Department of General Surgery at Tohoku University Hospital, the lab provides clinical care and conducts research for babies and children with diseases that require surgery. It is a clinical department specializing in surgical diseases of the whole body in children, excluding the intracranial region, the heart, and the bones. Its research focuses on biliary atresia, small bowel transplantation, intestinal failure, and childhood cancer. The lab also works on minimally invasive surgery, which places less burden on patients, and on psychological support for patients and their families.

Urologic oncology is an affiliated chair established at the Miyagi Cancer Center Research Institute, and its main research area is the clinical care of malignant tumors of the urogenital tract. Making use of a large number of cases, the lab works on clinical care, research, and education for prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, testicular tumors, renal pelvis and ureter cancer, adrenal tumors, and penile cancer. The lab began prostate cancer screening early on and also puts effort into preventive medicine. Through the working-professional admission program of the Tohoku University Graduate School, students can gain clinical experience at Miyagi Cancer Center as staff physicians or residents, while conducting basic research at the same research institute and earning a doctoral degree.

The Advanced Visual Medicine Endowed Lab aims to develop treatments for intractable retinal neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and age-related macular degeneration. Focusing on advanced technologies such as drug delivery systems, gene therapy, and stem cell medicine, the lab keeps the clinical application of these treatments in view. In the lab's own introduction, glaucoma, neuroprotection, drug discovery, genetic analysis, and animal experiments are listed as keywords.

The lab studies how chromosomes are segregated into two cells during cell division. It aims to clarify the relationship between abnormal chromosome segregation and cancer. The lab values observing chromosome behavior directly under the microscope without preconceptions, then forming hypotheses from those observations and testing them. It is also developing anticancer drugs that act during mitosis.

The lab is a neurology department that treats diseases of the brain and the rest of the nervous system. It provides clinical care for a wide range of conditions, from headaches, dizziness, and memory loss (dementia) to stroke, epilepsy, and intractable neurological diseases. In research, it has produced results centered on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy. To achieve translational research that applies research results to clinical practice, the lab works with centers within the university and is also engaged in university-originated drug discovery.

The lab studies how the balance between oxidation and reduction in the body (redox) is involved in biological functions and disease. It focuses in particular on supersulfides, such as cysteine persulfide and polysulfides. The lab investigates the chemistry of supersulfides, how they are formed in the body, their metabolic network, and their relationship to disease together. Through this research, the lab aims to open up a new research field in redox medicine.

The Nursing Technology Development Lab studies how skin wounds heal from an immunological perspective. The lab aims to develop a wound dressing containing nano-sized lactic acid bacteria, and the work is carried out through industry-academia-government collaboration. Papers on how obesity affects the function of immune cells in the skin and on the mechanisms involved in burn healing have been accepted by academic journals.
