The Cancer Medical Science / Tumor Pathology Lab (Miyagi Cancer Center) works, from the standpoint of pathological diagnosis, on predicting the effects of therapeutic drugs before treatment begins. For immune checkpoint inhibitors, each drug has its own set of diagnostic assays, which makes the diagnostic procedures complicated and is considered to cause many problems. The lab believes that better diagnostic biomarkers and companion diagnostics that can be used across organs would help avoid this confusion. The lab's web page explains that the Tissue Bank Center is responsible for verifying the quality and accuracy of the specimens it stores.

The Thoracic Surgery Lab is a department of the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer at Tohoku University and conducts research on lung cancer and lung transplantation. As a clinical department, it operates as the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Tohoku University Hospital and treats diseases of the chest, such as those of the lungs, mediastinum, and chest wall, that require surgical treatment. Founded in 1950 as the surgery division of the Tohoku University Research Institute for Tuberculosis, it is one of the thoracic surgery departments with the longest history in Japan. Tohoku University Hospital is the only lung transplant center in the Tohoku region, and in 2000 it performed the first lung transplant from a brain-dead donor in Japan.

The Ultra-Early Imaging Diagnosis Collaborative Research Lab studies pre-onset diagnosis (ultra-early imaging diagnosis), which diagnoses disease before it develops. Using multimodality imaging, which combines several types of imaging examinations, the lab has built up knowledge through its work on cardiovascular diagnostic imaging. The lab has collected whole-body CT, MRI, PET, and ultrasound images together with blood test data for more than 20 years, and uses this data in its research. The lab aims to predict onset and to use that to help prevent it.

The Kampo and Integrative Medicine Collaborative Research Lab conducts undergraduate and postgraduate Kampo (traditional Japanese medicine) education, Kampo clinical practice, and a wide range of basic and clinical research related to Kampo. Around the world, there is a movement to incorporate traditional medicine into healthcare, and integrative medicine, which makes comprehensive use of complementary and alternative medicine together with Western medicine, is spreading. Alongside seeking new findings, the lab also works to train people who can provide guidance in Kampo clinical practice, education, and research.

The International Cooperation for Disaster Medicine Lab aims to strengthen the capabilities of people working in medicine, public health, and welfare so that society can remain resilient to disasters. The lab is part of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science at Tohoku University. The institute was established as a research institute dedicated to disasters, and it was the first to include the field of disaster medicine. The lab names two missions: standardizing disaster coordinators, who coordinate medical response during disasters, across Japan, and having healthcare professionals learn how to respond to disasters. On the greeting page, Prof. Egawa states that whether a hospital can restore its functions after a disaster depends heavily on the business continuity plan it has made in advance.

The Northern Miyagi Preemptive Medicine Lab is a joint course established at Osaki Citizen Hospital, where you can conduct clinical research that only a regional hospital makes possible. A visiting professor from Osaki Citizen Hospital and a full-time professor from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine supervise students together. Unlike a university, the lab is based at a community hospital that treats a large number of common diseases, and this allows students to conduct clinical research on the primary and secondary prevention of each disease. The lab is described as suited to people who want to conduct medical research while training as clinicians in skills such as surgical techniques.

The Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention division conducts epidemiological research on cancer. Epidemiology is a field that studies, in groups rather than individuals, the frequency and distribution of disease and the factors that influence its onset and prognosis. The lab conducts research using Miyagi Prefecture cancer registry data, questionnaire surveys of patients admitted to Miyagi Cancer Center, and data from joint research with other institutions. The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at the Miyagi Cancer Center Research Institute, headed by Prof. Kanamura, handles the operations of the Miyagi Cancer Registry Office and the hospital-based cancer registry office.

As the field responsible for midwifery education, the Women's Health and Midwifery Lab values sexual and reproductive health and aims to realize human well-being. The lab regards sexuality and reproduction (whether or not to have children, and if so, by what method and when) as a human right that people should be free to choose for themselves. The lab studies body care suited to women's life stages, such as postpartum urinary incontinence and decreased bone density during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as support for families welcoming a child, including perinatal mental health. Research on support for pregnancy, childbirth, and families is carried out in collaboration with partners such as the Comprehensive Perinatal Care Center at Tohoku University Hospital.
