The AI Frontier Medical Innovation lab studies how to estimate disease risk from large-scale data on the genome and lifestyle. The lab applies statistical methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and theories of genetics and genomic science to medical and genomic information collected in genome cohorts, biobanks, and medical institutions in Japan and abroad. Recently, the lab has also focused on applying large language models to electronic medical records and on research into genomic language models. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Risk Statistical Analysis Room."

The Tumor Biology lab focuses its research on the function of BRCA1, the product of the gene responsible for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Among BRCA1's functions, the lab studies in particular its roles in centrosome regulation and in homologous recombination repair, which fixes DNA damage. The lab aims to develop cancer treatments that target the centrosome and to apply measurement of homologous recombination repair to diagnosis. The lab's PhD students belong to the Graduate School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Life Sciences.

The Modomics Medicine lab centers its research on "modomics," the comprehensive study of the chemical modifications that occur on molecules in the body. Under external stress or internal factors such as disease and aging, various molecules undergo chemical modification, gain new functions, and affect the activity of cells and organs. The lab focuses on RNA modifications in particular, studying their relationship to physiological functions such as metabolism, immunity, and aging, as well as to human diseases. The lab's website also introduces the Modomics Pharmaceutical Sciences group of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Division of Biochemistry studies how gene expression is regulated and how cell differentiation and cell responses are determined. Focusing on transcription factors and chromatin structure regulators, which act as gene switches, the lab investigates hematopoietic stem cell differentiation, immune cell responses, and the mechanisms of cancer development. Research combines biochemical and molecular biology techniques with mass spectrometry, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics. The lab provides education and research supervision in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Health Sciences at the undergraduate level, and in the Doctoral Program in Medicine and the Master's Program in Medical Science at the graduate level.

The lab of Professor Takahiro Arima in the Division of Informative Genetics studies the development and function of the placenta, which is essential for fetal survival. This lab was the first in the world to succeed in establishing human trophoblast stem (TS) cells. Using these cells, the lab investigates the mechanisms of placental development and differentiation, and how diseases related to placental abnormalities arise. Its research themes also include mammalian evolution, genomic imprinting, and the safety of assisted reproductive technology.

The Division of Environmental Medicine is a lab that investigates, from molecules to whole organisms, how the environment affects human health and disease. Its main keywords are ferroptosis, a form of cell death, redox regulation, oxidative stress, and drug discovery applications. Ferroptosis is a cell death that arises from the dual nature of iron, oxygen, and lipids. In cancer, inducing it is expected to serve as a treatment strategy, while in conditions such as organ injury, suppressing it may lead to treatment. This long-established division originated from the Department of Hygiene at Tohoku University, and Professor Eikan Mishima joined it in April 2026.

The Radiological Examination Science Lab studies the measurement and evaluation of radiation exposure from radiological examinations and protection against it, as well as quality control and optimization of radiological examination equipment. The lab works on radiation exposure of patients and medical staff, medical radiation exposure of children, and the development of new methods for measuring and evaluating radiation dose. The lab also provides education in diagnostic radiological technology and medical physics, and trains researchers with problem-solving skills. The lab is a division within the graduate Department of Health Sciences, and its faculty are also affiliated with the Disaster Radiation Medicine division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Molecular Medical Biochemistry Lab, as the Division of Molecular Medical Biochemistry in the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, studies how living organisms protect themselves from oxidative stress. On the theme of the molecular basis of regulation of the KEAP1-NRF2-sMAF system, the lab held a symposium at the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Biochemical Society. The lab has also published a paper on an experiment in which Nrf2-knockout mice stayed in space and returned alive, and it works on space medicine research as well.

The lab studies stress-related diseases as a field of behavioral medicine, which investigates the relationship between disease and behavior or psychology. Its distinctive feature is that it investigates stress from the perspective of the psychosomatic correlation, in which the mind and body influence each other. A representative disease of the psychosomatic correlation is irritable bowel syndrome, which is considered one of the diseases in which the interaction between the brain and the gut is disrupted. The lab also works on stress-related psychological trauma, maternal separation, and eating disorders.
