The lab studies how "brain aging," the decline in brain function that occurs with age, is involved in lifespan. In particular, it aims to clarify the role of the hypothalamus, a region of the brain, by investigating it from the molecular level to the tissue level. The lab also works with experts in epidemiology, clinical medicine, and mathematical modeling to develop new ways to extend healthy life expectancy in humans. The lab is one of the research divisions of the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer.

The lab works on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, based at the Disease Control and Prevention Center (DCC) of the Japan Institute for Health Security. In infectious diseases, the scope extends beyond diagnosis and treatment of individual diseases to prevention and public health measures. The main research themes include diagnosis using genomic methods, treatment and prevention, infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, and the clinical epidemiology of imported infectious diseases. The DCC states that, through clinical care, human resource development, information dissemination, and research and development, it contributes to building a society and a country that are not defeated by the threats and impacts of infectious diseases.

The Disaster Medical Informatics lab studies medical information systems that are useful in times of disaster. The lab builds the systems needed at each stage of a disaster, and also works on backing up medical information and making use of the data. The lab considers information technology a means rather than an end, and also values integrating it with, and improving, what is in use today, such as paper. The lab belongs to the Disaster Medical Science Division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science.

The Biobank Life Science lab belongs to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization and conducts research on the construction and management of biobanks. The biobank it works with is a large-scale, population-based biobank that collects samples from the general population, linked to the Organization's community health survey (cohort study). It collects and stores biological samples such as plasma and urine from donors who have consented to participate in research, linked to anonymized health information. Because high-quality research requires high-quality samples and information, the lab studies topics such as optimizing the management of biological samples and data.

The Medical Data Science lab uses large-scale observational data to tackle a wide range of problems in medicine and healthcare. Newly established in 2026, the lab traces its origins to the chair of Hospital Administration, the first of its kind established in Japan, in fiscal 1952 (Showa 27). The data it uses include registries such as the National Clinical Database and insurance claims databases. The lab also works on the social implementation of its research results, using databases and data-driven methods.
