The Medical Ethics Lab studies a wide range of ethical issues related to medicine and public health, through both normative analysis and empirical research. Beyond the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Medicine, the lab has also been responsible for education in bioethics and medical ethics in other faculties and graduate schools. It offers a special master's course, the "Training Course for Leaders in Medical Ethics and Public Health Ethics," in which students can also experience actual ethics review. The lab is also engaged in clinical ethics consultation at Tohoku University Hospital.

The Behavioral Medicine lab in the Department of Neuropsychiatry (National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry) studies stress-related disorders, mainly psychosomatic disorders and eating disorders. Its themes are cognitive function related to psychological stress and individual differences in brain activity and brain morphology. The lab aims to identify biomarkers that are useful for diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis prediction.

The Disaster Obstetrics and Gynecology field studies how disasters affect pregnant women, babies, and gynecologic diseases. Because childbirth continues to occur even in the midst of a disaster, the lab aims to build systems for perinatal care during disasters and to establish international standards for them. The lab investigates the effects of stress on pregnant women and the effects of life in evacuation shelters on gynecologic diseases, and explores ways to prevent them. The lab belongs to the Disaster Medical Science Division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and the professor's primary appointment is at the Graduate School of Medicine.

The Radioisotope Center manages radiation exposure of radiation workers in the Graduate School of Medicine and provides their education, offering a research environment where radioisotope experiments can be carried out safely. Nearly all nuclides used in life science research are available, and the center supports research with a large number of instruments. The gamma irradiation device at this center, the only one among Tohoku University's radioisotope facilities, irradiates cultured cells and mice and rats, and also supports bone marrow transplantation experiments. As its own research, the center investigates the mechanisms by which leukemia develops through abnormal expression of EVI1 and GATA2.

The lab conducts research on regenerative medicine and drug discovery using human ES cells, iPS cells, and tissue stem cells. Targeting intractable pediatric and developmental diseases for which no treatment exists, the lab searches for drug discovery seeds using patient-derived iPS cells and develops tests to examine the effects of drugs on the liver. Research takes place at the Center for Regenerative Medicine of the National Center for Child Health and Development in Setagaya, Tokyo.

The Advanced Neurosurgical Therapeutics Lab studies diseases of the blood vessels in the brain, using surgical treatment of cerebrovascular disorders as its starting point. Its targets include cerebral aneurysms, moyamoya disease, and cerebrovascular malformations, and it works on developing new treatments, studying disease mechanisms, and investigating cerebral circulation and metabolism. It is a department of the Graduate School of Medicine, Department of Medical Science, and its name includes Kohnankai Kohnan Hospital.

The Genome Function Analysis Lab studies small Maf proteins (sMaf), which play an important role in the transcriptional response of genes to stress. Genome information encoded in the DNA sequence goes through transcription and translation to determine cell differentiation and homeostasis. Small Maf proteins form dimers with CNC and Bach proteins and regulate transcription through CsMBE. The goal of the research is to clarify the molecular basis of this regulation of gene expression. The lab also works on developing genome analysis methods that use next-generation sequencers.

The Radiation Oncology Lab is a department within the Department of Radiation Oncology at Tohoku University Hospital, and it conducts clinical care and research centered on radiation therapy for cancer. The department states that it was among the first in Japan to introduce advanced treatments such as stereotactic radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Tohoku University has a long-established research institute that has contributed to the development and advancement of PET, and the lab also conducts research that makes use of it. In collaboration with the Department of Health Sciences, the lab also offers a Medical Physicist Course for students who aim to become medical physicists.

The Psychiatry Lab works on clinical care and research on mental disorders as the Department of Psychiatry at Tohoku University Hospital and as the psychiatry and neurology field of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. Founded in 1916 as the Chair of Psychiatry, it is a department with a long tradition, and in recent years it has worked in a wide range of areas, including early psychosis, child and adolescent psychiatry, perinatal mental health, liaison psychiatry, and cognitive behavioral therapy for various disorders. The lab focuses on public health in collaboration with local governments and residents, including mental health support after the Great East Japan Earthquake, maternal and child health, and child health. As part of Tohoku University's university-wide effort to create future medicine that makes full use of biosensing and AI technologies, the lab collaborates with labs and companies inside and outside the university to develop technologies in the field of psychiatry.

The Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacy Lab is a lab in the Tohoku University Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, established with one of its main goals being to train pharmacists who have practical knowledge and research ability. Faculty members, who are also pharmacists, hold concurrent positions at Tohoku University Hospital and conduct education and research while also providing clinical care. Graduate students who hold a pharmacist license also support pharmaceutical work at the university hospital, and through this practice they learn to identify problems, propose solutions, carry them out, and evaluate them. The lab has a Prescription Design Support Office in the outpatient building of the university hospital, and works closely with the Department of Pharmacy and the Molecular Pathophysiology and Pharmacy field to develop a training program for next-generation advanced specialist pharmacists. This introduction is based on a description on the lab's website from around 2009.
