The Center for Regional Cancer Care Promotion is established within the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and examines the characteristics and problems of cancer care in Miyagi Prefecture. The center was established to promote exchange of specialized medical personnel, to provide the latest diagnostic technologies such as clinical trials and genetic diagnosis, and to develop and advance a network of patient groups, cancer counseling, and palliative care. Considering that Miyagi Prefecture, with its aging society and the concentration of cancer care resources in urban areas, may be regarded as a microcosm of Japan as a whole, the center aims to revitalize regional cancer care using this prefecture as a model. The center's website introduces the Tohoku Wide-Area Next-Generation Cancer Professional Training Plan, and the center houses its secretariat.

The Regional Oral Health Science Lab studies the relationship between oral diseases and systemic diseases. Periodontal disease is deeply involved in the onset and exacerbation of diabetes, preterm birth, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Using multi-omics information, including human genome, metabolome, and metagenome data collected in the large-scale cohort studies of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization, together with lifestyle, health, and medical information, the lab analyzes the associations between the oral environment and various diseases. By analyzing diseases from multiple perspectives to clarify their pathology, the lab aims to improve the quality not only of dental care but of medical care as a whole.

The Department of Neuropsychiatry (National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry) conducts clinical research in functional neurosurgery. Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders, and surgery is indicated for drug-resistant epilepsy, in which seizures cannot be controlled with medication. The lab also conducts genomic analysis of specimens obtained during surgery, as well as clinical research on deep brain stimulation for involuntary movements such as those in Parkinson's disease. The lab is located at the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry in Kodaira, Tokyo.

The Department of Advanced Child Health and Development Medicine studies human growth and development and their abnormalities, from the fetal period through childhood and adolescence to adulthood. Targeting a wide range of medical and surgical diseases treated at Miyagi Children's Hospital, the lab conducts clinical research and pathophysiological research, aiming to advance fetal and pediatric medicine. The hospital has many specialists well versed in diverse fields of fetal and pediatric care. Graduate students recommend a specialist at the hospital whose research supervision they wish to receive as their academic advisor (Visiting Professor), and receive research supervision after obtaining approval from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine.

The Oxygen Medicine lab studies how cells regulate gene activity and energy metabolism in hypoxic environments, where oxygen is insufficient. In solid tumors, cells can survive even when abnormal blood vessels cause the oxygen supply to be interrupted or unstable. Using genetically modified mice and biochemical methods, the lab investigates these mechanisms at the molecular level. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Division of Creation of New Medical Fields (Oxygen Medicine Core Center, Suzuki Lab)."

The Clinical Pharmacy lab investigates the effects and side effects of drug therapy through clinical research and experiments. Under the motto "Through two-way dialogue between pharmacy and medicine," the lab holds that a broad understanding of clinical medicine is essential for studying pharmacy. The lab aims for students to ultimately acquire the expertise, and the ability to communicate with clinical care teams in practice.

The Cancer and Aging Biology lab, based in the Division of Cancer Stem Cell Research at the Miyagi Cancer Center Research Institute, searches for new therapeutic targets for rare cancers such as head and neck cancer and bile duct cancer. Even the cancer of a single patient is made up of cancer cells with different characteristics, such as being resistant to anticancer drugs or radiation, proliferating quickly, or metastasizing easily. The lab aims to clarify which cancer cells should be targeted to achieve more effective treatment. This research field is a cooperative department of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, and the head of the Division of Cancer Stem Cell Research serves as its Professor.

The Health Data Informatics division is the lab of Prof. Ogishima at the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization. The lab lists bioinformatics and medical informatics as its research keywords. Prof. Ogishima also serves as head of the organization's Integrated Database Office. In the course "Data Management I," Prof. Ogishima lectures on the integrated database at the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization.

The lab focuses on breast and prostate cancer and works to elucidate the pathology of sex hormone-dependent tumors. Both are among the cancers with the highest number of patients in Japan, and their numbers continue to rise. Sex hormones play an important role in their growth and progression. The lab believes that by studying the actions of sex hormones in detail, it can build new treatment strategies and establish indicators (biomarkers) that predict how well a treatment will work. Building on pathology, which observes cells and tissues under the microscope, the lab combines experiments using disease models such as cultured cells and verifies its findings with its own hands.
