Atsushi Kambayashi, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Kambayashi Lab conducts research that uses mathematical models to quantitatively predict how drugs are absorbed in the body and how they take effect. The lab develops both mechanistic models, which are based on underlying mechanisms, and data-driven models, which are built from data. By understanding drug quality and pharmacokinetics together, the lab aims to support decision-making in drug development and patient-centric quality design. The lab places research at the center of education. It values developing students' ability to set their own problems and lead them to solutions, and to communicate their results in both Japanese and English.
Kosuke Kusamori, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Kusamori Lab studies the development of "cell-based medicines," in which living cells are administered to patients to cure disease. Using pharmaceutics, drug delivery systems, and cell and tissue engineering, the lab aims to turn cells into effective and safe "medicines." Using somatic stem cells and iPS cells, the lab controls which type of cell a stem cell becomes and builds tissue-like constructs, and also works to clarify biological phenomena in which cells are involved. The lab is also developing "mitochondria-based medicines," which use mitochondria, the organelles inside cells, to cure disease.
Makiya Nishikawa, Professor
1 student voices
The Nishikawa Lab aims to develop drug delivery systems (DDS) that precisely control the interaction between the “drugs” given to treat disease and the “body.” Because drugs act by interacting with molecules, cells, and organs in the body, the lab believes that maximizing only the useful action (drug efficacy) would lead to effective treatment. From the standpoints of biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, the lab is building new methods to control how drugs move in the body, along with systems to evaluate that movement quantitatively. The lab tests the effectiveness of the methods it creates in cells and in animal models of disease.
Takeshi Wada, Professor
0 student voices
The Wada-Sato Lab conducts research in nucleic acid chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, and peptide chemistry. The lab researches the creation of nucleic acid drugs using organic chemistry methods, and the chemical modification of biomolecules such as sugars and peptides to create new functional molecules and drugs. Lecturer Kazuki Sato works on the chemical synthesis of sugar phosphates, phosphorus-modified nucleic acids, and peptides.
Hiromi Uchiro, Professor
0 student voices
The Uchiro Lab studies the design and synthesis of compounds, based on naturally occurring bioactive substances, that could lead to new drugs. The lab investigates the structure-activity relationships of bioactive substances, aiming for compounds that act more selectively and potently on their target biomolecules. Through these challenges, the lab also works on developing new synthetic reactions.
Fumiaki Uchiumi, Professor
0 student voices
The Uchiumi Lab studies the mechanisms that determine how strongly genes are expressed, among the genetic information written in DNA. The lab investigates how the expression of genes involved in carcinogenesis, metabolism, and aging, as well as interferon-stimulated genes, is regulated. By identifying genes that play important roles, the lab aims to develop new gene-based therapies for cancer and immune diseases. The lab is introduced as a lab of the Department of Life Sciences and Drug Discovery in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the undergraduate level, and of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the graduate level.
Yosuke Harada, Professor
0 student voices
The Harada Lab studies how antibodies are produced when the body encounters a pathogen, and how the memory of that encounter is retained. When the body encounters a pathogen it has met before, it rapidly produces large amounts of high-quality antibodies to eliminate the invader. Vaccines are a method that makes use of this immune memory. The lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of antibody production and the formation of immune memory at the cellular and molecular levels, and to develop new vaccines.
Kazunori Akimoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Akimoto Lab studies cancer stem cells, which are thought to cause cancer recurrence after treatment. Based on findings from analyzing patients' cancer genomics data, the lab combines data science and experiments to investigate the properties of cancer stem cells. Once these properties are clarified, new anticancer drugs and treatments that target cancer stem cells can be expected to follow.
Tadayoshi Hayata, Professor
0 student voices
The Hayata Lab studies the basic molecular and cellular principles behind the development, differentiation, maintenance of homeostasis, and repair of the various types of cells that build the body's organs. Using mouse genetics, genome editing technology, omics analysis, and regenerative medicine approaches, the lab investigates how organs such as the musculoskeletal system and kidneys are formed. The lab aims to contribute to the development of new drugs and preventive and therapeutic methods for intractable diseases. It is a lab in the field of Molecular Pharmacology in the Department of Life Sciences and Drug Discovery, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Yoshikazu Higami, Professor
0 student voices
The Molecular Pathology and Metabolism Lab studies the mechanisms of aging and obesity from the functions of adipose tissue and adipocytes. Using long-lived mice and obese mice, the lab analyzes the functions of adipose tissue and adipocytes, as well as mitochondrial function. The lab is searching for drug discovery seeds for anti-obesity drugs and metabolism-improving drugs that can prevent the various diseases that develop with aging and also extend healthy life expectancy.
