The lab conducts end-to-end research spanning materials, devices, integration, AI systems, and real-world implementation. Its goal is to create sustainable electronics that connect people, things, and nature. It works on developing neuromorphic circuits that mimic nerves, and on creating flexible electronics through printing technology. The lab provides new methods for monitoring human biological information, infrastructure, and the condition of crops, and pursues its research with real-world implementation in mind.

The lab conducts both basic and applied research toward the real-world implementation of flexible electronics and wearable sensors. Using organic semiconductor technology, it controls the physical properties of thin, light, bendable electronic devices and applies them to sensors. Organic semiconductor technology allows electronic devices to be made through coating and printing processes with a low environmental burden, and it is expected to contribute to a sustainable society. To make use of sensor data, the lab is also deepening its collaboration with information science.

This lab, which studies bacterial coexistence, researches ways for both gut bacteria and pathogenic bacteria to live and coexist well with humans. The lab's website introduces the field of gut bacteria and gut flora as increasingly shown to be linked to improved immunity and anticancer effects in humans. Pathogenic bacteria, meanwhile, have drawn attention for their rapid acquisition of drug resistance in recent years, and the lab explains that this is also closely connected to gut flora. Associate Professor Seiji Yamasaki is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Advanced Co-Creation Studies, and also holds concurrent appointments at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Kazuhiko Matsumoto, Project Professor

The lab studies the construction of a basic system that links university basic research to new industries efficiently, quickly, and reliably. It also puts effort into collaboration and exchange with research institutions overseas, and is in charge of joint research and personnel exchange with the international research institute imec. The Matsumoto Group aims to build a biosensing system using graphene FETs to quickly detect the various viruses lurking in living spaces. The Kobayashi Group studies the creation and properties of silicon-based agents.

The Comprehensive Analysis Center is a shared facility of SANKEN (The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research) for comprehensive compositional analysis and structural characterization of various materials spanning organic, polymer, inorganic, and metallic materials. Dedicated faculty and staff, divided into compositional analysis, spectroscopic analysis, electron microscopy, and state analysis groups, manage and operate the instruments, supporting the materials research of each lab through contract analysis and analytical advice. The center's Functional Molecular Analysis division is a cooperating division of the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Osaka University, and works on developing asymmetric catalysts and environmentally benign reactions. The research of the Project Associate Professor likewise builds on synthetic organic chemistry and heterocyclic chemistry, working on developing asymmetric catalysts and creating new reactions that use them.

The Nuclear Matter Physics Group is a research group that conducts nuclear experiments at the Van de Graaff Experimental Facility on the Toyonaka Campus of Osaka University. At the lab open house, titled “The World of Atomic Nuclei Seen with Accelerators,” it introduces accelerators and experimental equipment. The website advises those considering joining as fourth-year undergraduates or going on to the master's or doctoral program to contact Prof. Fukuda. The content of the website dates from around fiscal 2019.

The lab studies the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise when new science and technology are introduced into society. The lab aims to research and develop "social technology" for addressing ELSI in parallel with the research and development of the science and technology itself. At the Social Technology Research Division of the D3 Center, the lab works on personal data and AI technologies. At the ELSI team of the Human Metaverse Disease Research Hub (PRIMe), it works on biodigital twins. Researchers with different specialties, nationalities, and backgrounds come together and carry out research that crosses disciplinary boundaries.

The Datability Platform Research Division studies platform technologies that use IoT and AI to collect, analyze, and share data from the real world. Building mechanisms for research data management to advance open science is another pillar of its research. Its predecessor was the Service Creation and Support Division of the Institute for Datability Science, and it was newly launched as a research division of the D3 Center in October 2024. With an Associate Professor who joined from the Research and Development Office of the University Library, the division pursues research under its new structure from the perspective of data utilization.

The Theoretical Economics Division is a lab where Professor Takuro Yamashita and Associate Professor Jin Ye of the Institute of Social and Economic Research, Osaka University, are based. In the official faculty list, Professor Yamashita's fields are given as microeconomics, mechanism design, information design, and game theory. Associate Professor Jin Ye's fields are given as game theory, behavioral economics, and experimental economics. Both are also listed as faculty members of the Graduate School of Economics through its cooperating chairs.
