Tanaka Lab researches novel nanofunctional material devices using functional oxides, two-dimensional atomic-layer materials, and others. By combining techniques for making artificial nanoheterostructures with ultrafine fabrication techniques, the lab builds extreme nanostructures. The lab's website also offers a lab introduction video.

The Extreme Nanofabrication Lab investigates the physical and chemical processes that quantum beams induce inside materials. As a tool for this, the lab is developing pulse radiolysis systems with femtosecond and attosecond time resolution. To that end, it also studies methods for generating and measuring electron beam pulses. The lab aims for new developments in the field where radiation chemistry, accelerator science, and electron microscopy intersect.

The lab uses state-of-the-art electron microscopes to analyze the atomic-level structure of nanomaterials and evaluate their functions. It aims to create new materials and bring out new functions. It is developing instruments such as the environmental transmission electron microscope (ETEM), which observes at the atomic scale what happens at the boundary between gas and solid. The lab is a cooperating laboratory of the Division of Materials and Manufacturing Science, Graduate School of Engineering, and accepts students in both the master's and doctoral programs.

The lab conducts research using computer simulations and condensed matter theory to understand the functions of materials at the nanoscale and to find ways to bring out better properties. It also develops new simulations that apply data science, including machine learning. It also studies the theory of spintronics, which makes use of the spin of electrons. The lab is a cooperating laboratory of the Department of Materials Engineering Science (Materials Physics area), Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, and accepts students in both the master's and doctoral programs.

The lab studies the development of organic molecules with electronic and optical functions, based on elucidating and controlling the functions of organic materials at the molecular level. It designs and synthesizes electronic and optical functional molecules with new extended π-conjugated systems, as well as nanoscale π-conjugated molecules aimed at molecular wires, and investigates their properties. Target applications are organic field-effect transistors, organic solar cells, and single-molecule electronics. The lab is a research division of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, and serves as a cooperating laboratory of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering.

The Bionanotechnology Lab (Taniguchi Lab) studies single-molecule science, which uses nanodevices to examine the electrical conductance, temperature, structure, and other properties of a single molecule. Combining nanotechnology, quantum measurement, AI, and biology, the lab is developing fifth-generation sequencers that directly read the base sequences of DNA and RNA and the amino acid sequences of proteins. The lab uses this sequencer to discover new cancer markers and is developing methods for early cancer diagnosis. Going forward, the lab will also begin research to find trace amounts of antibodies and antigens in the body and to create drugs for cancer and intractable diseases.

The Environmental and Energy Nano Applications Lab develops process technologies and materials technologies for making low-power devices in order to solve environmental and energy problems. Its research uses the nanofabrication facilities and technologies of the Nanotechnology Center of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research. This lab is established as an in-house concurrent-appointment field of the center.

The Precision Molecular Synthesis Chemistry Lab (Takizawa Lab) studies organic synthesis at the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research. The lab's announcements report results such as research that incorporates machine learning to make the search for reaction conditions more efficient, and research that uses Bayesian optimization to find flow synthesis conditions. A special lecture on synthesis using electrochemistry has also been held.

The Materials Biomimetics Lab combines biomimetics, which imitates the functions of living organisms, with electronic materials to study new nanofunctional materials and devices. In living organisms, distinct functions such as sensing, information processing, and action are connected and operate on ultra-low power consumption. The lab focuses on this mechanism. It is developing synaptic transistors that mimic the brain, wearable sensors with good biocompatibility, and vital-sign measurement systems. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Associate Professor Kanki's Office."

The Biomolecular AI Sensing Applications Lab studies how to identify biomolecules through electrical measurement of single molecules using nanodevices. The lab has aimed to detect molecular modifications, such as methylation attached to DNA, RNA, and amino acids, at the single-molecule level. It has also used machine learning techniques to analyze the signals obtained from the measurements. It is a research field housed in the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research.
