The Oiwa Lab (Quantum System Creation Group) studies new devices based on light, electrons, and spin. Centered on semiconductors, the lab works on quantum information processing that uses the quantum mechanical properties of electron spins and photons. Spintronics, which creates and combines new optical, electronic, and spin materials, is also a field of its research. The lab carries out everything from the fabrication and characterization of high-quality materials to precise quantum transport measurements, and aims to discover new phenomena.

Daichi Chiba, Professor

The Interface Quantum Science Lab (Chiba Lab) studies spintronic devices and sensors. The lab develops flexible devices, strain sensors, and a scanner for inspecting rebar inside concrete. The lab was founded at the University of Tokyo in 2013 and moved to Research Division 1 of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research at Osaka University in April 2019. With the move, the lab also took on a concurrent affiliation with the School of Engineering Science.

Tsuyoshi Sekitani, Professor

The Advanced Electronic Devices Lab (Sekitani Lab) studies soft electronic devices made from organic materials. The research highly controls the molecular structure, electronic states, and physical properties of organic materials, and develops them into flexible electronics and photonics. The lab's motto is to learn everything from academic work rooted in basic sciences such as mathematics and physics to systems that contribute to real society. Students can be involved in a wide range of electronic device manufacturing, from materials synthesis, circuit design, fabrication processes, and integration to the evaluation of physical properties and characteristics.

Yuta Nakashima, Professor

The Integrated Intelligent Media Lab (Nakashima Lab) conducts research to clarify whether artificial intelligence truly understands the meaning of images and videos. Believing that understanding the meaning of images and videos is deeply tied to their correspondence with natural language, the lab also works broadly on Vision and Language research that combines the two. The lab also conducts applied research that makes advanced use of images and videos by leveraging large language models and similar tools.

Shohei Shimizu, Professor

The Intelligent Reasoning Lab (Shimizu Lab) is a data science and AI lab focused on causal discovery. It aims to make causal discovery a standard analytical method in scientific research and in industry and policy settings, building the foundation for a society where causal inference is used routinely. The lab works with researchers and practitioners from a wide range of fields, from the natural and social sciences to engineering and medicine. In particular, it develops new methodologies that can estimate causal relationships from observational data even in situations where interventional experiments are difficult.

Kazunori Komatani, Professor

The Knowledge Science Lab (Komatani Lab) studies spoken dialogue systems that talk with people, using speech recognition and natural language processing technologies. The field has both an engineering side, writing programs to build systems, and a scientific side, asking what it means for a conversation to be mutually understood. Because it deals with the language that humans use, it also draws on insights from linguistics and social psychology. The lab regards building spoken dialogue systems that work in real environments as a difficult challenge, because errors in speech recognition are unavoidable.
