The Joint Research Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Radiology researches the use of artificial intelligence in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), which supports physicians' diagnosis based on medical images. Together with companies, the lab tackles the challenges involved in developing AI-based CAD: preparing training data, developing high-accuracy systems, and incorporating them into the clinical workflow. The lab also develops AI technologies that handle the problem of limited case numbers, as well as explainable AI, aiming for practical use of next-generation AI-CAD.

The Joint Research Chair of Brain Function Diagnosis and Reconstruction (Hirata Lab) researches and develops technologies for measuring, reconstructing, and controlling brain function, with the aim of diagnosing and reconstructing it. Project Professor Hirata, who heads the chair, has studied how the brain works using magnetoencephalography and applied it to examinations, and has worked on the research and development of brain-machine interfaces, which reconstruct brain function by engineering methods. Through joint research with a group of companies, the lab aims for technologies that can be put into practical medical use, such as wireless devices implanted in the body. Project Professor Hirata completed graduate school in engineering and worked as an engineer at a company, then switched to medicine and became a neurosurgeon.

The Advanced Molecular Therapeutics Lab researches the development of treatments for intractable diseases that target pathological forms of a protein called periostin. Several splicing variants, in which exons are missing, are produced from the periostin gene. It has become clear that among them are forms that play physiological roles, and forms that appear in disease and either worsen or improve the pathology. The lab investigates the role of periostin in heart failure, aneurysm, cancer, cerebral infarction, and other conditions, and connects this to the development of treatments.

The Center for Education and Research on Training Professionals to Protect Future Lives is the world's first center for education and research on training professionals in death investigation. The Center consists of three divisions: the Human Resource Development Division, the Social and Public Policy Division, and the Cutting-Edge Data Development Division. Its activities include enhancing educational programs, building an education network with other universities, and proposing public policy based on cause-of-death investigation data.

The Twin Research Center is a center affiliated with the Graduate School of Medicine that builds the foundation for twin research and promotes and supports it. Twin research is a research method for clarifying the genetic and environmental factors that affect all aspects of human life. The Center collects DNA, RNA, and serum (blood) samples and questionnaire responses from registered twins, and uses them in joint research with research groups inside and outside the university. The Center consists of researchers in medicine and health sciences, as well as dentistry, human sciences, economics, pharmaceutical sciences, and other fields.

The Cancer Stem Cell Regulation endowed department analyzes immune responses against cancer cells and researches the development of immunotherapies that target cancer cells, especially cancer stem cells. Centered on peptide vaccine therapy targeting WT1, which is expressed in many cancers, the lab continues research to enhance its effect from both basic and clinical perspectives. Recently, to overcome the decline in quality of infused T cells, the lab has also been working on producing T cells that exhibit and maintain high function. It is an environment where data obtained in mice can be verified using human specimens collected in clinical trials and drug-approval trials.

The Healthcare Economics and Management endowed department conducts research on healthcare economics, healthcare administration, and healthcare management. Covering medicine, economics, management, and public administration, as well as engineering, pharmacy, dentistry, and other fields, it pursues interdisciplinary research on healthcare. It takes up challenges that cannot be solved from a medical viewpoint or in clinical settings alone, such as medical care for the elderly, physician shortages, and deficits in hospital management. Beyond research and education, the department is run with an emphasis on contributing to society. The information on the lab's website dates from around 2013.

The Endowed Chair of Cancer Immunology pursues basic and clinical research toward new cancer immunotherapies that are gentle on the body and have few side effects. Centered on the WT1 peptide vaccine, which targets the cancer antigen WT1, the lab investigates ways to enhance the vaccine's effect and its potential as a preventive vaccine. The lab conducts its research in collaboration with other related departments, many clinicians, and researchers overseas. It is an endowed chair at the Borderless Design Medical Research Center, Division of Health Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University.
