Masashi Murakami, Professor

The Functional Ecology Lab studies how the diversity of living things arises and is maintained. There are countless species on Earth, and within each species individuals also differ from one another. The lab examines how this diversity has changed over the long history of evolution and, more recently, through climate change and human activity. Working in forest, river, snow and ice, and island ecosystems and with experimental populations, the lab studies a wide range of organisms, including insects, fish, plants, and microorganisms.

Hitoshi Tomaru, Professor

Professor Hitoshi Tomaru's lab studies methane hydrate on the seafloor and the chemistry of water moving underground. Methane hydrate, an ice-like substance containing large amounts of methane, is widespread on the seafloor around Japan. In response to changes in the marine environment such as temperature and pressure, methane hydrate repeatedly forms and decomposes over shorter timescales than other geological phenomena. The lab also uses iodine isotopes dissolved in water to investigate by what paths and over what length of time materials and water move in subduction zones.

Hiroki Suzuki, Professor
0 student voices
Suzuki Lab studies architectural design as well as architecture and urban planning. As a lab, it takes part in projects involving actual buildings, such as the renovation of a certified center for early childhood education and care and of a ward office. In Kumagaya and Gyoda in Saitama Prefecture, the lab participates in downtown revitalization projects. The lab also conducts research on the psychological effects people receive from spaces, using a sensory room in which light and sound stimulate the senses to help people relax.

Sumiko Ebara, Professor
0 student voices
The Ebara Lab specializes in architectural history and architectural conservation. It belongs to Living Environment Creation Design, one of the education and research areas of the Architecture Course.

Satoshi Okada, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Okada Lab studies architectural design and the architectural theory behind it. The professor in charge runs an architectural design office and has designed works of many scales, from houses and vacation homes to galleries, furniture, and products. Before moving into design practice, the professor spent about ten years as an architectural historian, focusing mainly on 18th-century Italian classical architecture. A pillar of the professor's design approach is to seek a beauty that holds up even when pared down to the minimum, regardless of trends.

Kenjiro Matsuura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Matsuura Lab studies problems related to the planning and design of living spaces, from cities to farming and mountain villages. Using fields near Chiba Prefecture as its setting, the lab carries out practical research and design work in collaboration with citizens, local government, and experts. Rather than building something new from scratch, the lab reads existing towns, architecture, and local resources and translates them anew into today's context. Its subjects include walkable towns, rethinking the use of road space, revitalizing shopping streets, and historic townscapes.

Yohsuke Yoshioka, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Architectural Ergonomics Lab studies how visual information affects activities in architectural spaces. Since 2003, the lab has pursued research toward this single goal in the Architecture Course at Chiba University. Recently, the lab has been running experiments with participants that combine immersive virtual environment technology and eye tracking. By varying familiar elements such as window shape, floor level differences, lighting layout, and the height of guide signs, it measures how people respond.

Jun'ichi Ito, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Ito Lab, with architectural design at its core, studies spaces that become places where people belong. At the youth center in front of the university's main gate, a park in Chiba City, an community center in Sodegaura City, and other sites, students take the lead in renovations and workshops. The lab is also researching homes for children in child care institutions. In a weekly reading group, members work through books about space one at a time.

Kasane Yuasa, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Yuasa Lab specializes in architectural planning, landscape planning, and facility management. Management of public facilities and public spaces, as well as urban planning, are also listed among its areas of expertise. The lab belongs to Living Environment Creation Design, one of the educational and research areas of the Architecture Course.

Jun Munakata, Professor
0 student voices
The Munakata Lab specializes in building environmental engineering. Within this field, its specialties are the luminous and visual environment and environmental psychology in architecture. The lab belongs to Environment Formation Management, one of the educational and research areas of the Architecture Course.
