Mitsuharu Yamamoto, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Yamamoto's specialty is formalization using proof assistants. The research themes are computer-based verification and the frameworks for it. In the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Informatics, the professor belongs to the mathematical informatics area.
Ryosuke Kodera, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Kodera researches representation theory. Representation theory is a field that studies how algebras act by translating them into concrete forms such as matrices. The objects of study are representations of quantum loop algebras, Yangians, and related infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Crystal bases and quiver varieties are also listed as research areas.
Shun Maeta, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Maeta studies differential geometry, geometric analysis, and information geometry. The lab works on objects called Ricci solitons and Yamabe solitons. In information geometry, the professor is interested in geometric flows on Hessian manifolds and their self-similar solutions. Although the professor's graduate school affiliation is the Graduate School of Education, research in the lab is purely mathematical.

The Elementary Particle Theory Lab studies elementary particles, the most fundamental building blocks of matter, and the laws that govern them. The work is theoretical, describing the behavior of elementary particles within the framework of quantum field theory of gauge fields. Using flavor physics and CP violation as clues, the lab works toward physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The lab also advances research on nonperturbative methods, which apply field theory to strongly interacting systems.

The Experimental Particle Physics Lab studies elementary particles, the most fundamental building blocks of matter, especially neutrinos. Founded in January 2021, it is a new lab that mainly uses accelerators and tracking detectors. Neutrinos are hard to produce and hard to detect, and many of their properties remain unknown even today. Through experiments at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, the lab works to unravel the mysteries of astroparticle physics.
Hitoshi Nakada, Professor

The lab studies the properties of atomic nuclei, treated as finite quantum many-body systems, from a theoretical standpoint. An atomic nucleus is a system of about 100 protons and neutrons packed into a region roughly one ten-thousandth the size of an atom, moving according to quantum mechanics. The elements around us were synthesized by nuclear reactions over the history of the universe. Making active use of computers, the lab studies the various properties of atomic nuclei theoretically.
Masamune Oguri, Professor
0 student voices
The lab studies topics ranging from the large-scale structure of the universe and mergers of black holes and neutron stars to cosmic-ray acceleration and astrophysical magnetospheres. The lab clarifies cosmic phenomena at many different scales using theory and simulation. Using gravitational lensing and gravitational waves based on general relativity, together with nuclear physics and plasma physics, the lab takes on the challenge of explaining these phenomena. The lab also collaborates with projects at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, JAXA, and research institutions in Europe and the United States, carrying out theoretical simulation research closely tied to observation.
Shigeru Yoshida, Professor

The lab pursues new approaches to observing the universe, centered on two fields: neutrino astronomy and multimessenger astronomy. The Neutrino Astronomy division to which the lab belongs is the only institution from Japan participating in the IceCube experiment, an international collaboration of 12 countries conducted at the South Pole. Photodetectors embedded in the glacier capture the Cherenkov light emitted by neutrinos, elementary particles that cannot be seen. The lab also works on hardware, including the development of new photodetectors for next-generation experiments.
Masahiro Sato, Professor
0 student voices
The Sato Lab builds on condensed matter theory and statistical physics to study quantum many-body systems, optical properties of matter, and nonequilibrium phenomena across these areas. The lab explores, from a theoretical standpoint, how to understand and create new properties of matter. Its research is organized around keywords such as spintronics, magneto-optics, and Floquet engineering. While learning from the long history of physics, the lab aims to create new phenomena and research fields through ideas not bound by existing frameworks.
Shintaro Hoshino, Associate Professor

The Condensed Matter Theory Lab (Hoshino Lab) studies, from a theoretical standpoint, the properties of matter produced by collective behavior of electrons in solids. Electrons in solids are extremely numerous, and they give rise to a rich variety of cooperative phenomena that could not be imagined from the behavior of individual electrons. A typical example is superconductivity, a quantum condensed state in which electrical resistance vanishes at low temperatures. The lab aims to uncover the origins of these exotic properties and to open up new laws, phenomena, and functions.
