The lab aims to elucidate how cancer develops and to develop drugs to treat it. Using a variety of materials, including human specimens, Drosophila, and mice, it carries out research in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and drug discovery science. Recently, the lab has been focusing on pancreatic cancer, for which treatment options are extremely limited. Lab visits are accepted, and the lab welcomes people who want to do research in the master's or doctoral program.

The lab studies radiation therapy and particle therapy that eliminate tumors while preserving the body's functions. One challenge is how to deal with internal organs whose positions constantly shift because of breathing, heartbeat, and bowel movement. Drawing on cutting-edge engineering and science, the lab aims to develop practical, highly effective devices and treatment techniques. The faculty member in charge belongs to the Faculty of Medicine.

The lab studies how to apply science and engineering technologies, such as radiation physics, quantum beam application engineering, and imaging engineering, to actual medical care. Particle therapy, which uses accelerators for medicine, is expected to concentrate the dose on the cancer and reduce the burden on patients' bodies. Working in collaboration with the Proton Beam Therapy Center at Hokkaido University Hospital, the lab trains medical physics researchers and engineers involved in developing medical devices. The faculty members in charge belong to the Faculty of Engineering and Hokkaido University Hospital.

Centering on technology for measuring radiation (radiation measurement), the lab studies new techniques used in radiation therapy and diagnosis. Radiation measurement is a foundational technology shared not only by radiation therapy but also by radiological diagnosis and nuclear medicine. Under the motto "research and development that is useful in the clinic," the lab works with Hokkaido University Hospital and aims to develop technologies that are actually adopted in clinical practice. Prof. Ishikawa, who is in charge, is a faculty member of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Clinical Medical Physics Lab consists of medical physicists who work at the cutting edge of radiation therapy at Hokkaido University Hospital. Research is carried out close to the clinical setting, where intensity-modulated radiation therapy, proton therapy, and real-time tumor-tracking radiation therapy, which follows moving organs, are performed. Ideas born in the clinic are tested through experiments and simulations in the lab, with the aim of advancing radiation therapy and developing medical devices. The faculty members in charge belong to Hokkaido University Hospital.

The Medical Image Analysis Lab researches ways to improve the SPECT and PET images acquired in nuclear medicine examinations. Nuclear medicine is a field that introduces a radioactive drug into the body, detects the radiation emitted from inside the body with a device, and examines the function of organs and tissues through images and numerical values. Using image reconstruction and image processing techniques, as well as deep learning with AI, the lab works to improve both the clarity of images and the accuracy of numerical values. Associate Professor Kei Wagatsuma, who is in charge, is a faculty member of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Applied Molecular Imaging Science Lab researches and develops new molecular probes for molecular imaging, which turns information about molecules inside the body into images. Its work spans searching for target molecules, techniques for designing and synthesizing probes, developing synthesis equipment, and research toward clinical use. Recently, the lab has put particular effort into research on precision medicine and theranostics, which link image-based diagnosis to accurate treatment. The staff come from varied fields such as pharmaceutical sciences, veterinary medicine, and agriculture, and the lab recruits graduate students regardless of their undergraduate faculty or university.

The Biomarker Imaging Science Lab uses noninvasive imaging methods such as MRI and CT to study highly accurate methods of diagnostic imaging. It aims to develop imaging methods that capture small lesions and early-stage changes that have been hard to detect, as well as changes in function at the cellular and molecular level. In the lab, students sharpen their research and presentation skills at weekly journal clubs and presentation meetings, and are encouraged to present at academic conferences in Japan and abroad. The professor in charge, Associate Professor Khin Khin Tha, is a member of the Faculty of Medicine.

The Molecular Oncology Lab studies the regeneration of oral tissue and the control of disease, based on molecular biology and biomaterials engineering. It focuses in particular on defects of the jawbone and oral tissue that arise along with oral tumors. It aims to regenerate bone and periodontal tissue lost in tumor treatment. The professor in charge, Associate Professor Yuichiro Matsui, is a member of the Faculty of Dentistry.

The Molecular and Cellular Dynamics Measurement Lab conducts molecular biology research for cancer treatment with radiation. Radiation therapy is one of the three major cancer treatments, but much remains unknown about how irradiation affects tumors and the surrounding normal tissue. The lab studies cell death caused by treatment stress, the mechanisms by which cancer cells suppress it, and the process by which tumor properties change as a result.
