The Food and Agricultural Market Studies Lab studies the structure of markets and distribution for agricultural products and food. Established in 1964 as the Chair of Agricultural Market Theory, the lab has examined the structure of the markets surrounding agriculture, including agricultural product markets and agricultural input markets. The lab studies topics such as the restructuring of distribution centered on supermarkets and convenience stores, and local production for local consumption in school lunches. The lab holds a lab seminar for undergraduate students and a weekly research meeting (the Market Symposium), and the lab seminar also includes rural field survey training.

The Regional Partnership Economics Lab studies rural revitalization from the standpoint of socioeconomics. The lab investigates networks for new rural revitalization, nonprofit organizations such as cooperatives, and the impact that new entrants and farm successors have on local communities. The lab was established for research and education in collaboration with local communities, and it conducts training and research in municipalities in Hokkaido with which the Research Faculty of Agriculture has partnership agreements. The lab also runs the farm practicum for "Foundations of Food Safety and Security," in cooperation with Rakuno Gakuen University and Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, as well as the Hokudai Marché.

The Anatomy Lab studies the structure of animal bodies and its abnormalities. The lab examines the form of organs using a range of methods, from light and electron microscopy to spatial transcriptomics. Focusing mainly on animal anatomy, the urinary system, and immunity, the lab explores problems that threaten the health of animals and humans, and their solutions. The lab encourages students to take an active part in education, diagnosis, and clinical work in addition to research.

The Physiology Lab studies the bodily functions that living organisms have for staying alive. The lab aims to clarify these functions at the molecular level. It values keeping a broad perspective that spans molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and whole organisms, from the smallest to the largest scale. The lab recruits graduate students and collaborators on a rolling basis.

The Biochemistry Lab studies how animals adapt to harsh environments such as cold and food scarcity. The lab investigates how the body's metabolism changes during hibernation and similar states, focusing in particular on the role of adipose tissue. Its goal is to understand the mechanisms of feeding behavior, body temperature maintenance, and energy metabolism. It aims to apply animals' ingenious survival strategies to the prevention and improvement of obesity, diabetes, and related conditions.

The Pharmacology Lab studies how drugs and chemical substances act on the body. Using drug effects as a clue, the lab investigates the functions of excitable cells such as nerve and muscle cells. Recently, the lab has focused on glial cells in the brain, examining the transmitters they release and the mechanisms inside these cells. The lab is recruiting graduate students and also accepts collaborative research.

The Radiation Biology Lab studies how radiation affects the bodies of living organisms, from the perspectives of both veterinary medicine and medicine. Experiments use cultured cells and laboratory animals such as mice and rats. The lab investigates how cancer cells respond to radiation, the environment surrounding tumors, and treatments that combine radiation with drugs. Interested students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Hokkaido University and from the Joint Department of Veterinary Medicine with Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine are welcome.

The Laboratory Animal Science Lab uses laboratory animals such as mice and rats to study the mechanisms of diseases, including genetic disorders and infectious diseases. The lab also takes on the challenge of developing new disease models using new animal species such as cotton rats and genetically modified animals. From a veterinary medicine standpoint, the lab also works on the health and welfare of laboratory animals. The lab also carries out activities that contribute to training board-certified specialists in laboratory animal medicine.

The Toxicology Lab studies how chemicals affect animals and humans. The lab investigates how the mechanisms that protect living organisms from harmful substances differ among animal species, and how they have evolved. In collaboration with research institutions in African countries, the lab also investigates how environmental pollution associated with rapid development affects wildlife, livestock, and humans. The lab is recruiting graduate students and seeking collaborations for joint research.

The Wildlife Science Lab is the first lab at a national or public veterinary university in Japan to specialize in wildlife. With the goal of conserving biodiversity, the lab conducts research and education that contribute to the protection and management of wildlife. From the perspectives of both conservation biology and wildlife medicine, the lab studies the physiology and ecology of large mammals such as bears, deer, and marine mammals. The lab also studies infectious diseases involving wildlife and problems caused by invasive alien species.
