The Restorative Dentistry Lab takes "restoration" as its main theme and aims to repair the tissues related to teeth so that teeth can be preserved for a long time. While continuing clinical care and education in restorative dentistry, the lab has worked on developing new dental materials and treatment techniques. The lab plans to combine dental regenerative research with biomaterials research to develop next-generation dental materials that have the ability to regenerate tissue. The lab carries out research jointly with a variety of labs in Japan and overseas.

The Periodontology Lab conducts a broad range of research on periodontal disease, from basic to clinical studies. The lab works on regenerating lost periodontal tissue using growth factors and scaffolds, which are materials that serve as a foothold for cells. It also investigates the mechanisms linking the mouth and the whole body, such as how periodontal disease affects digestive and respiratory diseases. The lab values the independence of graduate students and supports them in taking on new research that goes beyond the lab's existing themes.

The Gerodontology Lab engages in clinical care, education, and research on the dental care needed in a super-aged society. The lab supports the oral health of people with multiple illnesses, people who need long-term care, people undergoing cancer treatment, and people with dementia, working together with medicine, dentistry, and a range of other professions. Centered on clinical research involving human participants, the lab also conducts basic research in molecular biology, pharmacology, and bacteriology to complement it. The lab places importance on assessing oral function, swallowing function, nutrition, and overall health together.

The Comprehensive Dental Care Lab is a comprehensive dentistry lab established in 2024 as the 21st lab of the Faculty of Dental Medicine. Comprehensive dentistry is a field that addresses oral health and disease as a whole, based on collaboration among multiple professions and integration of dental specialties. Its research focuses on the "biointerface" that determines the success of dental treatment, combining materials science, nanotechnology, laser engineering, and regenerative medicine. The lab emphasizes translational research that carries the results of basic research into clinical use, and is also advancing industry-academia collaboration with companies.

The Vascular Biology and Molecular Pathology Lab works mainly on cancer research from the standpoint of pathology, the field that clarifies how diseases arise. The lab was the first in the world to isolate and culture tumor endothelial cells, which form tumor blood vessels, and has examined how they differ from normal blood vessel cells. In addition to daily pathological diagnosis, the lab studies the mechanisms of cancer malignant progression and the vascular pathology involved in severe COVID-19. The lab also conducts translational research that uses clinical specimens to connect the results of basic research to new diagnostics and treatments.

The Microbiology Lab studies microorganisms in the mouth and the body's immune system. In addition to its long-running research on Mycoplasma and innate immunity, the lab has in recent years been investigating how oral microorganisms affect systemic diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The lab is deepening its research on how the bacteria that cause periodontal disease act on the inflammasome, and on their role within tumors. The lab was established in 1969 as the Department of Oral Bacteriology and took its current name in 2024.

The Pharmacology Lab conducts research on drug nurturing and drug discovery, targeting bones and joints and the nerves and blood vessels associated with them. It pursues clinically relevant research on metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis, joint diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and skeletal pain including orofacial pain. By comparing the bones of the jaw and mouth with those of the trunk and limbs, the lab explores how drugs act and how diseases arise. It incorporates molecular omics and imaging to analyze from the molecular level to the whole organism in an integrated way.

The Oral Diagnosis and Medicine Lab is a department of oral medicine and oral surgery that diagnoses and treats oral diseases using the approaches of diagnostics and internal medicine. It was the first department at a Japanese national university to put forward oral medicine as its field, and it diagnoses not only diseases confined to the mouth but also oral symptoms of systemic diseases. The lab strives for minimal surgery through early detection, and for internal-medicine treatment aimed at preserving organs. Building on knowledge gained in the clinic, it conducts basic and clinical research, and also aims to put the results into practical use as new medical technologies and drugs.

The lab surgically treats diseases of the mouth, jaw, and face, and studies diagnostic and treatment methods for them. Its specialties are oral cancer, dentofacial deformities, and cleft lip, jaw, and palate, and specialized clinical groups provide treatment at Hokkaido University Hospital. For benign tumors and cysts of the jaw, the lab established the "repeated treatment method," which preserves the jawbone, and is conducting clinical research so that it becomes the standard approach at facilities nationwide. The lab aims to develop new diagnostic and treatment methods that preserve and improve the function and form of the mouth.

The lab conducts clinical and basic research on diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy for the head and neck region. Using MRI, CT, ultrasonography, and salivary gland scintigraphy, it works to improve the ability to diagnose diseases such as tumors and inflammation. Drawing on dental techniques, the lab also studies how to deliver radiation more precisely and protect normal tissue from radiation damage. The lab incorporates active learning into radiology education for students and residents.
