The lab studies dental anesthesiology, also called systemic management and invasion control (control of surgical stress) in dentistry. In oral surgery and in dental treatment for people with disabilities and for children, the lab uses general anesthesia and intravenous sedation to support patients so that they can receive treatment safely. It puts particular emphasis on research on postoperative pain and on the prevention of postoperative delirium, which occurs after surgery. Another goal is to free patients from chronic pain and numbness in the face and mouth.

The Gnathology and Occlusion Lab studies functional disorders of the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint, and how to treat them. The lab works to clarify how the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint, and the bite (occlusion) relate to one another. Faculty members also see patients at the specialist temporomandibular disorder outpatient clinic in the Temporomandibular Joint Treatment Unit at Hokkaido University Hospital.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction Lab studies techniques for diagnosing and treating congenital oral conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common congenital malformations that appear on the surface of the body. The impairment is not limited to the shape of the face; it affects every function of the mouth, including breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speaking. In addition to developing treatment techniques, the lab conducts clinical and basic research aimed at future prevention.
