The Stem Cell Genetics Lab (Yusa Lab) has developed CRISPR screening methods based on the genome-editing technology CRISPR-Cas9 and uses them for genetics in mammalian cells. The lab applies this technology to the biology of stem cells and cancer cells, aiming to contribute to regenerative medicine and cancer therapy through insights from basic biology.

For organs such as the heart and lungs to function, it is important that mechanical factors such as volume and pressure change appropriately. The Mechanosensing Physiology Lab (Nonomura Lab) focuses on PIEZO channels, which underlie mechanoreception (mechanosensing), the detection of such mechanical changes, and works to clarify the role of mechanosensing in organ function, development, and disease.

The Supramolecular Structure Lab was established in July 2026 within the Research Center for Infectious Disease Models, which is affiliated with the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences. Supramolecular complexes in viruses and cells function only when many molecules are precisely assembled. By making their three-dimensional structures visible at the atomic and molecular level, the lab aims to elucidate the mechanisms of biological phenomena and apply them to molecular design and drug discovery. The lab is not limited to virology; it collaborates with researchers in a wide range of fields that need structural information, both inside and outside the university and across academia and industry.

The Clinical Foundation Lab was the first in Japan to succeed in establishing human ES cell lines, and its subsequent results are used not only for human ES cells but also for human iPS cells. Regenerative medicine that uses cells and tissues made from human ES cells and iPS cells (pluripotent stem cells) is entering the clinical trial stage worldwide. The lab develops the underlying technologies and establishes human ES cell lines for clinical use. Prospective graduate students are directed to contact the lab about admission.
