In hematopoiesis, the differentiation potential of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells becomes progressively restricted, giving rise to progenitor cells of various lineages. The Regenerative Immunology Lab (Kawamoto Lab) aims to analyze the mechanisms that determine the fate of progenitor cells in this process, with particular emphasis on the pathway leading to T cells. The lab also conducts research on the evolutionary origins of blood cells. The lab is also developing cancer treatments that use T cells regenerated from iPS cells or ES cells, and is preparing a clinical trial targeting acute myeloid leukemia.

The Developmental Epigenome Lab works to understand and control the inheritance and reorganization of genomic and epigenomic information throughout the development of an individual. It focuses in particular on early development, pluripotent stem cells derived from early embryos, and the developmental cycle of germ cells. The lab is also part of the Human ES Cell Research Center, where it carries out quality control of pluripotent stem cells and develops new technologies. For the admission of graduate students, applicants are asked to contact the lab.

The Integrated Biological Processes Lab (Kondoh Lab) pursues research on the mechanisms of fertilization, the regulation of inflammatory helper T cells, and work that combines fertilization and immunology. Much remains unknown about how sperm acquire the ability to fertilize and how inflammatory helper T cells sustain inflammation in tissues. The lab explores the molecular mechanisms behind these processes in the body from a broad perspective. In particular, the lab creates genetically modified mice to clarify how important target molecules are in the body.
