The Biomembrane Systems Lab uses bacteria as model organisms to study, with a variety of methods, the fundamental membrane-related processes common to all life. The lab investigates how proteins are translated, folded, secreted, inserted into membranes, and degraded in the cell, as well as the stress response mechanisms that act when these processes go wrong. Using approaches such as biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, and structural biology, the lab aims to clarify how proteins at the cell surface of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Vibrio species function and how their order is maintained.

The Life Data Science Lab is an interdisciplinary team of researchers from diverse backgrounds, including bioinformatics, data science, and the life sciences. The lab develops methods to analyze and integrate single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data. It aims to understand the principles that determine the spatial arrangement and interactions of cells and the functions of tissues, as well as life phenomena that remain unexplained.

The Stem Cell Genetics Lab (Yusa Lab) has developed CRISPR screening methods based on the genome-editing technology CRISPR-Cas9 and uses them for genetics in mammalian cells. The lab applies this technology to the biology of stem cells and cancer cells, aiming to contribute to regenerative medicine and cancer therapy through insights from basic biology.

For organs such as the heart and lungs to function, it is important that mechanical factors such as volume and pressure change appropriately. The Mechanosensing Physiology Lab (Nonomura Lab) focuses on PIEZO channels, which underlie mechanoreception (mechanosensing), the detection of such mechanical changes, and works to clarify the role of mechanosensing in organ function, development, and disease.
