The lab combines mathematical modeling, topological data analysis, optimal transport, AI, bioinformatics, and clinical data to build a research foundation for understanding disease mechanisms and differences between individual patients from a limited number of patient samples. This work is set against the rapid development of quantitative technologies that support the life sciences, such as multi-omics analysis, organoids, and in vivo imaging inside the living body. The lab places importance on training researchers who understand both medicine/life sciences and mathematical/information sciences, and who can bridge these fields to pose new questions.

The lab measures and manipulates brain circuits in primates, aiming to uncover how anxiety and conflict are appropriately regulated. For the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders, behavioral changes produced by manipulating local neural circuits are drawing attention, but the brain regions and circuit mechanisms responsible for anxiety and decision-making are not yet well understood. Using an approach-avoidance conflict task, which allows anxiety to be expressed numerically, in primates whose brain structure resembles that of humans, the lab is identifying neural circuits causally involved in value judgment. The lab welcomes people who are interested in both basic neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience and want to explore causal relationships between the brain and behavior.

The lab studies psychiatric disorders with adult onset, such as schizophrenia and mood disorders, from an international perspective, sharing a research structure with the psychiatry division at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. Psychiatry, which deals with mental illness, sits at the intersection of brain science as a natural science and social science, which includes the study of culture. Combining perspectives from neuroscience and global health epidemiology, and collaborating with various groups in Japan and abroad, the lab studies psychiatric disorders from multiple angles, from basic research to clinical practice.

The IFOM-KU International Joint Lab was jointly established by Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine and the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Italy, and its research is conducted on the Graduate School of Medicine campus. Focusing on the function of telomeres at the ends of chromosomes, the lab uses methods such as genome editing and imaging to understand how chromosomal abnormalities lead to the malignant transformation of cells and to increased malignancy in cancer cells. Master's and doctoral students each work on independent research topics, international students are part of the lab, and seminars are held mainly in English.

The RIKEN Neural Stem Cell Research Lab studies mammalian development at the level of transcription factors, with a focus on the development of the nervous system. The lab takes on the question of how, as a single fertilized egg becomes a complex organism, cells recognize their position and role and carry out specific events at specific times. The lab is a collaborative program with the RIKEN Neural Stem Cell Research Team, and it is located at RIKEN in Kobe.

The Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology Lab conducts research in pharmacometrics, which uses mathematical models and simulation to quantitatively analyze and predict drug responses (movement in the body, effects, and side effects), and in systems pharmacology, which views the body and disease as a single system to elucidate the interactions among drugs, the body, and disease. The lab aims to predict disease progression and the effects and side effects of drugs at both the population and individual levels, and to apply these predictions to optimal drug therapy in practice and to drug development. The lab conducts research and education in collaboration with its other research base, a lab at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in the United States.

The lab aims to keep blood gases, which are vital for life, at optimal levels around the clock, whether a person is awake or asleep. With hypoxia as a keyword, the lab studies a broad range of conditions: from acute respiratory failure that is hard to treat, to chronic respiratory failure, to sleep-disordered breathing such as sleep apnea, which is closely linked to neurological and cardiovascular diseases. The lab analyzes difficult cases of respiratory failure from the perspectives of both respiratory diseases and other diseases, and also aims to develop new methods of evaluation and treatment.

The lab is an endowed department established to advance clinical care, research, and education for rheumatic diseases, centered on rheumatoid arthritis, that cause joint pain and inflammation. It is part of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Rheumatology specialists from internal medicine and orthopedic surgery work together to build a patient cohort and a sample bank, and conduct both clinical and basic research. The lab runs outpatient clinics at the Rheumatology Center of Kyoto University Hospital. Alongside providing cutting-edge care, it works to educate medical staff and patients and to provide them with information.

The lab is an endowed department involving groups from cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, psychiatry, dermatology, and clinical epidemiology. Clinical departments of Kyoto University Hospital regularly create opportunities to bring the latest medical knowledge to doctors at public hospitals in regions with few or no specialists, with the aim of helping to train specialists locally. By working with the rich variety of cases in these regions, the university's specialists also aim to maintain and improve not only their own specialty but also their general diagnostic skills.

The lab is an endowed department within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, where it conducts treatment and research aimed at reconstructing musculoskeletal function. When musculoskeletal function is lost, quality of life drops sharply, and in older adults, slow recovery carries risks such as becoming bedridden, so prompt reconstruction with artificial joints, metal implants, artificial bone, and similar devices is needed. The lab develops medical devices suited to each patient's condition, with the aim of clinical application.
