The Future Society Ethics Education Research Division studies the relationship between new technologies and society as an ethical issue and links that research to ethics education at universities. It was established in April 2026 as an endowed research division, supported by the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education, within the Center for Next-Generation University Education Development at the Faculty of Arts and Science. It examines social issues arising from the spread of new technologies such as generative AI through interdisciplinary research across the humanities and sciences, combining ethics with insights from other fields. New courses it develops will be offered at Kyushu University, and its know-how and course packages will also be provided to higher education institutions across Japan.

Shunji Kimura, Professor
0 student voices
The Kimura Lab studies electronic circuits used in optical communication, especially integrated circuits for optical transceivers. Internet traffic continues to grow, and optical communication is required to deliver ever higher transmission speeds and larger capacity. At the same time, the services provided over optical networks are becoming more diverse. The lab therefore aims to realize integrated circuits for optical transceivers whose performance can be optimized to meet a wide range of requirements. The lab was established in July 2019.

Tomohide Terashima, Professor
0 student voices
The Terashima Lab studies power devices (power semiconductors), which are used in the power supply circuits of equipment that requires electricity. The lab advances research in power electronics using advanced simulation techniques. The lab belongs to the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering at Kyushu University.

Kazuhiro Umetani, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Prof. Umetani, in the field of power engineering, takes power electronics as its research theme. Its research keywords are power converter design and power module design. The professor is affiliated with the Department of Electrical Systems Engineering, Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering.

Hiroshi Miyazaki, Professor
0 student voices
The lab conducts research aimed at applying superconducting technology to a wide range of industrial fields. It works to clarify the electromagnetic characteristics of high-temperature oxide superconducting wires and conductors, and to improve quantitative techniques for evaluating them. The lab also conducts applied research on electrical machinery such as rotating machines, transformers, and cables. Professor Miyazaki aims to build electric propulsion systems for aircraft, using generators and motors based on superconducting technology.

Kenji Tahara, Professor

The Human-Centered Robotics Lab uses robotics technology grounded in mechanical engineering to study the mathematical and mechanical understanding of the advanced motor intelligence of the human body, and its engineering applications. Associate Professor Kazuto Nakashima specializes in intelligent robotics and perceptual information processing in this lab, and lists deep learning, soft robots, and 3D LiDAR as his research keywords. The lab works with data from 3D range sensors (3D LiDAR) and with state estimation for robot hands that have soft fingers. Associate Professor Nakashima belongs to the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, and joins this lab through the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering.

Chenbao Ye, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Associate Professor Chenbao Ye in the Fusion Materials Division studies oxide nanostructures as electrocatalysts. Associate Professor Ye also holds a concurrent appointment in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences.

Ken Tanaka, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Tanaka's lab studies materials with excellent biocompatibility for use in medical and healthcare products. The lab aims to understand, at the molecular level, the phenomena that occur at the interface between cells and materials, and to establish design guidelines for biocompatible materials. Building on polymer design and synthesis, interface analysis, and analysis of cell-material interactions, the lab studies medical materials that can be used for diagnosis and treatment. On the lab's website, it is introduced as Prof. Tanaka's lab in the Soft Materials Interdisciplinary Chemistry Field of the Soft Materials Division, Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering.
