The Functionality Emergence Integrated Systems Lab conducts research aimed at higher performance by incorporating new structures and new materials into semiconductor integrated circuits. Semiconductor device research requires knowledge from many fields, including mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials engineering, and electrochemistry, in addition to electronic engineering. The lab therefore pursues its research in an interdisciplinary way, from verification through simulation to fabricating actual devices and testing them. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Kino Lab."

The Circular Integrated Photonics Lab conducts research aiming for "Table-top Fabrication," in which optical devices are printed with a desktop printer. Starting from organic materials (soft materials), the lab develops "organic coherent photonics." It works on self-assembly by inkjet, mask-free processing using nano-scratching, and hybrid integration with inorganic waveguides. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshioka Lab."

The Superconductivity Science and Engineering Lab conducts research and development using superconducting technology, aiming to realize an advanced energy society that is compatible with the global environment. Superconducting wires can carry a current more than 100 times larger than conventional materials such as copper and aluminum, with negligible loss. The lab develops measurement and evaluation techniques that characterize superconducting materials at the wire level, and conducts research on improving material quality and on power applications. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Kisu Lab."

The System Mathematics Lab studies the analysis and design of dynamical systems, mainly using control theory and optimization theory. In recent years, the lab has been working on building foundational technologies that guarantee the reliability and stability of machine learning and deep learning algorithms and neural networks. The lab actively pursues joint research with research institutions and companies in Japan and with research institutions overseas, aiming to train researchers and engineers who can work internationally.

The Laser and Optical Applications Lab conducts research that uses light and lasers to find new value for the world. Lasers are a cutting-edge technology widely used in fields such as communications, processing, measurement, and medicine, and this lab is built on laser processing and nano- and microtechnology. Its research covers EUV light sources used in semiconductor manufacturing, high-speed laser welding of copper and other metals, optoelectronic devices using semiconductor nano- and microcrystals, and diagnosis of eye function using spectroscopy. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Nakamura Lab."

The Control and Optimization Lab studies how to make robots, drones, cars, and other systems move as desired, based on systems and control theory. A particular focus is the control of multiple vehicles or mobile robots as a group, such as platooning of self-driving cars and coordinated flight of multiple drones. The lab also works on high-precision control of systems that are digitally controlled by computers, on developing efficient optimization algorithms, and on developing transformable drones. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Kyushu University Systems and Control Laboratory (Yamamoto-Themelis Lab)."

The lab studies new manufacturing processes for semiconductor devices using ultraviolet lasers, as well as new semiconductor and dielectric materials, mainly oxides. Using excimer lasers, which are devices that emit powerful pulses of ultraviolet light, the lab develops manufacturing processes that change the properties of semiconductor materials or form semiconductor thin films through ultraviolet irradiation. The lab also conducts research on the physical properties of oxide semiconductors that show excellent semiconductor characteristics in low-temperature processes, along with device development, and research on the physical properties of dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric materials, along with development of device applications. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yabuta Lab."

The Electromagnetic Energy Applications Lab studies the development of advanced sensing systems that use electromagnetism. In medicine and biology, the lab develops immunoassay devices for disease diagnosis using magnetic markers, and magnetic nano-bioimaging methods using magnetic tracers injected into the body. In materials evaluation, the lab develops nondestructive testing devices for detecting defects and deterioration inside materials. The faculty member's researcher profile also lists the development of superconducting rotating machines for aircraft as a research theme.

Professor Kazuo Asahiro's lab on green space conservation studies the conservation and restoration of green space environments in suburban areas and in farming and mountain village areas. Through people's conservation and management, green space environments support functions such as biodiversity, amenity, scenic beauty, production of agricultural and forestry products, and disaster prevention. Working with citizens, government, and experts, the lab carries out research, education, policy recommendations, and practice, with the research goal of implementing conservation design (planning and design) in society. Its higher-level goal is to train people who can feel the beauty of the environment and communicate it.
