The Structural Organic Chemistry Lab synthesizes organic π-electron compounds of structural, theoretical, and physical interest, and aims to clarify the relationship between their structures and their properties and functions. Its research targets extend beyond molecules to supramolecules, molecular assemblies, and metal complexes. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Tani-Goto Lab." The website encourages people interested in the research or wishing to visit the lab to get in touch freely.

The Nano Physical Chemistry Lab creates new functional materials through the self-assembly of nanoparticles and applies them to biosensing. The lab investigates plasmon resonance, a phenomenon that occurs at the interface between metals and organic substances, across a broad range. A recent focus is the “plasmonic nanosheet,” a two-dimensional array of silver nanoparticles. The lab is exploring applications of this material, which confines light in a sheet only a few nanometers thick and guides it efficiently. On the lab’s website, it is introduced as the “Tamada-Okamoto Lab.”

The Nano Functional Chemistry Lab develops new functional substances and materials by making use of the characteristics of various elements. Aiming at energy-saving and resource-saving chemical processes, the lab develops nanoscale substances that show high performance in catalysis, energy storage, and mass transport. By controlling the size, shape, and composition of solids at the nanometer scale, the lab makes new catalysts with high activity. On the lab’s website, it is introduced as the “Yamauchi Lab.”

The Soft Interface Chemistry Lab studies soft interfaces, such as films of surface-active substances and biological membranes. Soft interfaces are involved in daily life through foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, and understanding their function requires clarifying the structure and morphology of the membranes. The lab combines interfacial tension measurements, microscopy, spectroscopy, and X-ray measurements using synchrotron radiation. The faculty members belong to the Faculty of Arts and Science and also hold appointments in the Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science.

The Organic Reaction Chemistry Lab develops environmentally friendly synthetic methods that use transition metal complexes as catalysts. Aiming to introduce the “desired functional group” at the “desired position” in a molecule, the lab works toward zero-emission organic synthesis reactions. The lab develops catalytic oxidation reactions that use oxidants that produce no “waste” by-products, such as oxygen in air and hydrogen peroxide. The lab also studies methods that use the oxygen atoms of water to make compounds labeled with oxygen isotopes.

The Biocatalytic Chemistry Lab focuses on the metabolic pathways of bioactive substances produced by microorganisms and plants, aiming to understand the chemical principles of life phenomena in nature. The lab discovers new enzymes that catalyze chemical transformations that are difficult to achieve with synthetic organic chemistry reactions, and studies the mechanisms of those reactions in detail. Based on the principles of catalysis, the lab also aims to develop practical biocatalysts that outperform natural enzymes. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name “Ushimaru Lab.”

The Radiochemistry Lab works with radioisotopes (RI) and the materials they are made from to study chemistry related to nuclear energy and nuclear fusion. The lab works on ozone chemistry, nuclide separation chemistry, and isotope separation chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary areas that combine them. The lab is located in the Ito Campus laboratory of the Center for Integrated Isotope Safety Management, and it is a cooperating research group of the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science. According to the lab website, it accepts applications from prospective undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students at any time, and it also welcomes lab visits.

The Functional Coordination Chemistry (Kosei Yamauchi) Lab uses metal complexes as catalysts to study reactions that drive water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction. Centered on metal complexes, the lab studies hydrogen evolution catalysts, oxygen evolution catalysts, and the splitting of water with visible light. Associate Professor Yamauchi belongs to the Institute for Advanced Study, and is also introduced as a member of the Coordination Chemistry Lab in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science.

The Solar-Terrestrial Physics Lab regards the space between the Sun and Earth as a single system and studies the physical phenomena that occur there. By combining observation, theory, and numerical simulation, the lab works to understand large-scale phenomena in a system where the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere are connected. According to the lab website, people who know little about magnetospheric phenomena need not hesitate to join, and the necessary knowledge and skills are naturally acquired in the course of research life. The lab also welcomes people who feel, "I don't really understand it, but let's just give it a try."

The Space and Terrestrial Electromagnetism Lab studies disturbances in the electromagnetic environment surrounding the Sun and Earth, from observation to theory. Near-Earth space supports our daily lives, for example through the operation of satellites, but it is also a harsh environment where solar activity causes geomagnetic storms. The lab investigates the mechanisms behind these disturbances using a geomagnetic observation network and ground-based radar operated by the International Center for Space Weather Science and Education, as well as satellite observations. Students sometimes travel in Japan and abroad to install magnetometers, and the lab also aims to contribute to society through daily updates of space weather information.
