Mami Wakabayashi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Mami Wakabayashi specializes in global health and works on research, practical activities, and education. When an infectious disease such as COVID-19 spreads across borders, it has a major impact on economies and on society as a whole. Prof. Wakabayashi believes it will become increasingly important to solve health challenges rooted in disparities between and within countries through cooperation across borders and disciplines. At the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Prof. Wakabayashi serves as a specially participating faculty member and teaches the special lecture "Introduction to Global Health" in the school's challenge-based courses.

Kenta Goto, Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor Kenta Goto specializes in the science of material properties, colloid science, and physical organic chemistry. He studies the boundary between the microscopic world, where molecules are in lively motion, and the macroscopic world, where matter functions as "things." In recent years, the lab has been publishing results on multiple, multiphase emulsions that behave like living things, and on molecules that convert light energy directly into motive power. At the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Assistant Professor Goto serves as a specially participating faculty member and teaches the special lecture "Chemistry and Human Society A." His home affiliation is the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering, and he also holds a concurrent faculty position in the Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science.

Boxuan Ma, Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor Boxuan Ma's research areas are educational data mining, learning analytics, human-computer interaction, and recommender systems. The lab's research themes include systems that help learning and mechanisms that read learners' states in order to support them. At the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Assistant Professor Ma teaches the courses "Real Data Analysis Techniques 1" and "Real Data Analysis Techniques 2." Assistant Professor Ma belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Science at Kyushu University and holds a concurrent appointment at the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation.

The Multiscale Structural Science Unit comprehensively studies the challenges faced in the transition from a fossil-fuel-centered society to a carbon-neutral one. Its research covers a variety of CO2 emission reduction technologies and energy efficiency technologies, as well as combinations of them. It also conducts research that considers the socioeconomic aspects of technologies and offers implications for policy and corporate investment strategies. Mathematical methods are also incorporated to achieve an optimal energy cycle.

The Mitsui Chemicals Carbon Neutral Research Center develops technologies for handling green hydrogen and CO2. It is divided into divisions for green hydrogen production and utilization, CO2 separation and capture, CO2 conversion and fixation, and advanced analysis and evaluation. On the center's website, the faculty members of each division are introduced by division.

The Research Center for Next-Generation Refrigerant Properties (NEXT-RP) is a research institution that evaluates the thermophysical properties, heat transfer characteristics, and cycle system performance of refrigerants for future use. It was established in April 2016 within the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I²CNER) at Kyushu University. Rather than doing all of its work at Kyushu University alone, it works in collaboration with research institutions in Japan and around the world. It conducts fundamental research on new refrigerants that do not deplete the ozone layer and have a low global warming potential (GWP).

The Division of Advanced Computational Science is part of the Research Institute for Information Technology at Kyushu University, and its faculty members research areas such as high-performance computing. The institute conducts research and development across a wide range of information-related fields, centered on computational science, information science, and data science, and provides computing services such as supercomputer systems to researchers nationwide. Faculty research descriptions include dynamic optimization of communication libraries, which let computers communicate efficiently with each other in parallel computing, and research on computation using GPUs. The institute is located in the West Zone of Ito Campus.

The Future Society Ethics Education Research Division conducts interdisciplinary research that considers the social issues brought about by new technologies as the “ethics of future society” and makes proposals based on that research. It is an endowed research division funded by the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education, a public interest incorporated foundation, and was established in April 2026 within the Center for Next-Generation University Education Development of the Faculty of Arts and Science. The research results will be developed into new courses on ethics education in higher education, which are planned to be offered at Kyushu University and also provided to higher education institutions across Japan. The division is also developing a new type of ethics course that uses VR thought experiments.
