AboutAbout the lab
Thinking about technology and society through ethics
The Future Society Ethics Education Research Division conducts interdisciplinary research that considers the social issues brought about by new technologies as the “ethics of future society” and makes proposals based on that research.
It is an endowed research division funded by the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education, a public interest incorporated foundation, and was established in April 2026 within the Center for Next-Generation University Education Development of the Faculty of Arts and Science.
The research results will be developed into new courses on ethics education in higher education, which are planned to be offered at Kyushu University and also provided to higher education institutions across Japan.
The division is also developing a new type of ethics course that uses VR thought experiments.

New technologies can spread rapidly because of their convenience, yet they may fundamentally change how people live and how society is organized (ethics in a broad sense). This division conceives the issues arising from the tension between such technologies and society as the “ethics of future society” and works to apply the results to new courses in ethics education.

Rather than leaving social issues to experts alone, the division reframes them as ethical problems for all of us and raises them in a form that many people can share. The research is interdisciplinary, spanning the humanities and sciences and not limited to the field of ethics.

The division develops new courses on ethics education in higher education so that its research results can be learned as classes. The courses encourage active participation in discussion and collaborative thinking, and will be offered at Kyushu University and provided nationwide.
