Kenji Tahara, Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazuto Nakashima studies intelligent robotics and perceptual information processing at the Human-Centered Robotics Lab in the Division of Mechanical Engineering. Using robotics technology grounded in mechanical engineering, the lab studies the advanced motor intelligence of the human body from mathematical and mechanical perspectives, and applies it to engineering. The lab's website covers the whole lab, including Professor Kenji Tahara and Associate Professor Hikaru Arita. A lab introduction video is also available for undergraduate students who are about to choose a lab.

Associate Professor Chenbao Ye works in the Division of Hybrid Materials at the Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering, and the research theme is oxide nanostructures as electrocatalysts. The listed research keywords are oxide nanostructures and electrocatalysts. Associate Professor Ye also serves as a faculty member of the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences, Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences.

Masaru Tanaka, Professor

The Soft Materials Lab studies materials with excellent biocompatibility for use in medical and healthcare products. By understanding at the molecular level the phenomena that occur at the interface between cells and materials, the lab aims to establish design guidelines for biocompatible materials. Building on the design and synthesis of polymers, the analysis of the structure and physical properties of interfaces, and the analysis of interactions between cells and materials, the lab studies medical materials that can be used for diagnosis and treatment. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Masaru Tanaka Lab."

The Environmental Energy Systems Lab studies strategies and policies that can help solve long-term energy problems, such as the world's energy supply and the environmental challenges society faces. Through the development of analytical methods and the use of computational models, the lab seeks to clarify the role that science and technology play in shaping better energy and environmental policy. Researchers from diverse backgrounds work on building decision-making frameworks that evaluate future scenarios from both "macro and micro" perspectives. The lab aims to contribute to realizing sustainable energy systems in Japan, Asia, and the world.

The Water Environment Engineering Lab (WEEL) studies the removal of pollutants from water and the generation of renewable energy from waste. Its targets include heavy metals such as arsenic and chromium, radioactive elements such as cesium and strontium, and antibiotics. The lab also researches recovering nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrate from wastewater. It also works on developing bioenergy, including methane and hydrogen production by anaerobic digestion and power generation by microbial fuel cells. The lab is a multinational research team that collaborates with scientists and engineers in Japan and other countries.

The Polymer Chemistry Lab uses highly controlled living polymerization to study how to precisely control the properties of polymers for advanced technologies. At its core is ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), which uses cyclic alkenes with large ring strain as monomers. Using mainly Grubbs catalysts, the lab synthesizes a variety of polymers and complex polymeric compounds with uniform molecular weights, and studies their applications. The lab's website states that it accepts both Japanese students and international students.

The Molecular Science Lab studies the physics of Coulomb crystals and Coulomb liquids formed by microparticles in plasma. When microparticles a few micrometers across are placed in plasma, they become negatively charged and confined, and while floating they form crystals or flow. Professor Kenji Furuya, who heads the lab, is primarily affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science, and supervises graduate students through a concurrent appointment at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences. Assistant Professor Yoshihiko Mogi of the same lab describes, in his researcher profile, research using theoretical chemistry methods such as molecular orbital theory and density functional theory. The lab is located at Ito Campus. Students who join take lectures at Chikushi Campus and carry out experiments at Ito Campus.
Naoki Ogiwara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Ogiwara Lab uses methods from inorganic and coordination chemistry and analytical chemistry to study the development and applications of new functional materials. The lab examines the structures and electronic states of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), metal oxide clusters, and metal nanoparticles using instrumental analysis, in order to understand the relationship between structure and function. On that basis, the lab tries applications to the adsorption, conduction, and conversion of molecules and ions. It is a new lab established in April 2025, located in the Center of Advanced Instrumental Analysis, and accepts students from the Materials Science and Engineering major of the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.
Yuichi Harada, Professor

The Solid-State Quantum Information Engineering Lab uses the physical concepts of quantum information to understand the states of matter at the nanoscale, and conducts research on device design and theory using nanotechnology. Building on KOINE, Kyushu University's own open innovation framework, the lab carries out research to test ideas that arise from discussions with members from industry, academia, government, and the public. The research is conducted as interdisciplinary, international joint research among industry, academia, and government. Professor Yuichi Harada's primary appointment is at the Headquarters for Academic Research and Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration, and he holds a concurrent appointment in the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.
