The Molecular Oral Anatomy Lab studies mesenchymal stem cells in the oral cavity and the mechanisms that regulate bone metabolism. At the undergraduate level, the lab teaches oral anatomy, tooth anatomy, oral histology, and oral embryology, as well as systemic anatomy, histology, and embryology. At the graduate level, students study a wide range of phenomena at the tissue, cellular, and molecular levels through research grounded in molecular biology. The lab aims to train researchers and dentists with a deep understanding of basic medicine and life sciences.

The Oral Cell Engineering Lab is part of the Department of Normal Oral Function Regulation in the Faculty of Dental Science at Kyushu University, and it studies how information is transmitted inside cells. Its predecessor was the Department of Oral Biochemistry, established in 1968, which took its current name in the organizational restructuring of 2000. The lab has examined from many angles the physiological functions of a protein that binds inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, which it discovered in 1992. Its current research themes also include the regulation of bone metabolism by the transcription factor NF-κB.

To put into practice the Faculty of Dental Science's philosophy of "contributing to overall health through oral health," the Oral Functional Molecular Science Lab carries out both life science research and dental research. The lab explores how oral inflammation, peripheral inflammation, and neuroinflammation relate to systemic diseases. In addition to educating graduate students, the lab is responsible for teaching pharmacology to undergraduate students. Through their research, the lab's members meet researchers from around the world and share their findings globally.

The Oral Function Analysis Lab analyzes oral sensation, with a focus on taste, at every level from molecules to whole organisms. The lab aims to develop new ways to prevent and treat taste disorders and lifestyle-related diseases. To study how taste is sensed, the lab uses genetically modified mice and taste bud organoids grown in test tubes. The lab belongs to the Department of Oral Homeostasis Regulation in the Faculty of Dental Science at Kyushu University, and is in charge of oral physiology.

The Oral and Brain Function Pathology Lab is a group in which principal investigators (PIs) belonging to the OBT Research Center carry out research based on the concept that "the secret to a long, healthy life lies in healthy oral function and oral health." With the goal of applying research results in clinical practice, PIs with different areas of expertise work together to understand various disease conditions in an integrated way, and aim to open up new fields in dental science. The OBT Research Center is a research center attached to the Faculty of Dental Science that studies oral function, brain function, and whole-body health comprehensively. Since fiscal 2021, the lab has accepted graduate students as an organization of the Graduate School of Dental Science.

The Oral Preventive Medicine Lab focuses its research on themes such as clarifying the relationship between the oral resident microbiota and oral health. The lab also aims to develop new ways to prevent dental caries (cavities) through molecular biological analysis. To clarify the link between oral health and whole-body health, the lab also conducts epidemiological research. The lab says it welcomes consultations, explanations, and visits from anyone interested in its research at any time.

As the academic unit responsible for pediatric dentistry, the Pediatric Oral Medicine Lab works on tooth developmental biology, elucidating how hereditary diseases arise, and regenerative medicine. In its research, the lab conducts regenerative medicine research in the dental field using iPS cells and dental pulp stem cells. For clinical education, a postgraduate training curriculum is available for obtaining board certification as a pediatric dentistry specialist. The lab's page introduces it as a pediatric dentistry department that serves as a base not only for Kyushu but for all of western Japan.

The Orthodontics Lab conducts research that analyzes, at the molecular level, abnormalities in the growth and development of the jaw and facial bones and the teeth that cause malocclusion. The lab does not view malocclusion as merely a problem of tooth alignment. It studies malocclusion on the premise that its cause lies in the foundation: the jaw and facial bones and the temporomandibular joint. In addition to studying tooth development and how cartilage and bone cells respond to force, the lab works on finite element analysis and the evaluation of masticatory muscle fatigue. The lab's website is published as the website of the Orthodontic Clinic at Kyushu University Hospital, together with information on orthodontic treatment and care.

The Biomaterials Lab researches biomaterials and related materials used to regenerate hard and soft tissues. It works on making porous materials that mimic the composition of bone, as well as bone cement, and on evaluating their reactions in the living body. The lab also conducts research on antibacterial materials, nanomedicine, and theranostics.

The lab's basic policy is to cut as little of the tooth as possible, remove as little dental pulp as possible, and extract as few teeth as possible, and it carries out research and clinical work aimed at saving teeth. As the endodontics clinic of Kyushu University Hospital, the lab specializes in operative dentistry and endodontic treatment, and it performs diagnosis and treatment using equipment such as dental microscopes and cone-beam CT. In research, work is progressing on three themes: regeneration and formation of the periodontal ligament, protection of the dental pulp, and aging of teeth. The lab aims to strengthen three abilities, namely diagnostic skill, investigative skill, and technical skill, and to apply them to training young dentists and educating students.
