Oral and Brain Function Pathology Lab
Machine-translated · View original
A research group that aims to contribute to whole-body health through the mouth.

AboutAbout the lab
The idea that the secret to a long, healthy life lies in the mouth.
The Oral and Brain Function Pathology Lab is a group in which principal investigators (PIs) belonging to the OBT Research Center carry out research based on the concept that "the secret to a long, healthy life lies in healthy oral function and oral health."
With the goal of applying research results in clinical practice, PIs with different areas of expertise work together to understand various disease conditions in an integrated way, and aim to open up new fields in dental science.
The OBT Research Center is a research center attached to the Faculty of Dental Science that studies oral function, brain function, and whole-body health comprehensively.
Since fiscal 2021, the lab has accepted graduate students as an organization of the Graduate School of Dental Science.
Key terms
- PI
- Principal Investigator. A researcher who leads a research group and is responsible for it
- Epigenome
- A general term for the mechanisms that regulate gene activity. It is affected by nutrition and the environment, and is involved in susceptibility to disease
- Sweet taste receptor
- A receptor protein that detects sweet taste. It consists of T1r2 and T1r3
ResearchResearch themes
To contribute to whole-body health through the mouth, the Faculty of Dental Science has established the OBT Research Center, where comprehensive research on various disease conditions is conducted from the molecular level to the whole-organism level. In this lab, PIs work together with the goal of applying research results in clinical practice.
*Illustrative imageLifestyle-related diseases explored through nutrition and the epigenome
The lab studies the molecular basis of how nutrient intake during the perinatal period and at each life stage affects susceptibility to disease, from the perspective of epigenome regulation. It also studies how predisposition to lifestyle-related diseases is formed through epigenetic modifications in the womb.
*Illustrative imageEnergy metabolism and the citric acid cycle
The lab investigates the role of the TCA cycle (citric acid cycle) in regulating metabolism in the body. Its research themes also include the functions of a side pathway of the citric acid cycle and of itaconic acid, and the role of Id4 in energy metabolism.
*Illustrative imageInteractions between the sweet taste receptor and taste-modifying substances
The lab analyzes the interactions between the sweet taste receptor (T1r2/T1r3) and taste-modifying substances using artificial taste cells. The artificial taste cells are cultured HEK293 cells that have been made to express taste receptors.
