The Precision Medicine Lab studies medicine that uses data such as genomic information to provide each patient with the cancer prevention and treatment best suited to them. The lab first aims to build the foundations for clinical care, education, and research in "cancer precision medicine," and in the future to extend the field to other areas such as lifestyle-related diseases. The department's three main themes are to clarify the diversity of cancer and develop new treatments, to establish prevention methods based on individual genomic information, and to build a clinical system in which new cancer drugs can be used. It was established in March 2020 as a unit within the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Clinical Medicine.

In its research, the lab works to clarify questions that arise in the clinic through basic research and to connect the findings to the development of new treatments. The lab also studies the behavior of immune cells around tumors using patient samples, and searches for biomarkers that can be measured in urine and blood. In education, the lab focuses on clinical clerkships for undergraduates, and for graduate students it promotes collaboration with basic medicine departments and study abroad.
