The Multi-omics Analysis Lab investigates how genes behave when cells differentiate, using approaches such as histone variants, epigenetics, and single-cell analysis. In skeletal muscle differentiation, the lab studies how cell fate is determined; in germ cells, it studies how marks are placed on the genome. Another pillar of the lab is research that analyzes omics data mathematically to reveal high-dimensional dynamics of life. In the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences' introduction of its divisions, the lab is listed under the name "Multi-omics."

The Medical Engineering Lab develops technologies used in medicine, such as drug delivery systems, diagnostic systems, and surgical robots. Its research themes include drug delivery for cancer and inflammatory diseases, diagnosis using biomarkers, and ultrasensitive imaging. As industry-academia collaborative research, Prof. Murata also works on supporting medical device development by local companies, in cooperation with government agencies.

The Pathophysiology and Restorative Internal Medicine Lab (First Department of Internal Medicine) is made up of clinical groups for hematology, oncology, cardiovascular medicine, collagen disease, infectious disease, and the liver. Each group works on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in its own field. In his researcher profile, Prof. Kikushige lists hematopoietic stem cells and leukemic stem cells as his research themes.

The lab is the Second Department of Internal Medicine at Kyushu University, where clinical care, education, and research are carried out in an integrated way. Since its founding in 1905, it has built a system capable of handling a wide range of diseases as a general internal medicine department. The cerebral circulation, kidney, gastrointestinal, hypertension, diabetes, endocrinology, liver, and Hisayama Study labs work together in patient care. In research, the lab places importance on answering questions that arise in clinical practice through research.

Medicine and Bioregulatory Science (the Third Department of Internal Medicine) is a general internal medicine department that brings together the endocrinology/metabolism/diabetes, hematology, liver, pancreas, and gastroenterology labs. The lab conducts research aimed at elucidating the pathophysiology of the intractable diseases it handles and developing new diagnostic and treatment strategies based on that understanding. With an emphasis on linking basic and clinical research, the lab engages in patient care and research across specialties. Researchers who did not graduate from medical school also take part in basic research with the clinical setting in mind.

The Cardiovascular Medicine Lab consists of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University and the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Kyushu University Hospital, and engages in both clinical care and research. The diseases it treats are wide-ranging, including heart failure, arrhythmia, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and congenital heart disease. Young doctors who wish to pursue research are encouraged to earn a doctorate at graduate school, and study abroad is also actively encouraged. Prof. Abe says he wants to develop warm, humane Physician Scientists who combine advanced medical knowledge and skills with a research mind.

The respiratory medicine lab pursues research aimed at clinical application, with the main themes of elucidating the pathophysiology of respiratory diseases and developing new treatments. Clinical care is divided into groups for neoplastic lung diseases, diffuse lung diseases, infectious diseases, and asthma/COPD. The professor states that it is necessary to explore the molecular mechanisms that control disease processes, and to bring findings from basic research into clinical practice through scientifically and ethically sound, high-precision clinical research.

Noriko Isobe, Professor

The neurology lab, the first neurology department established in Japan, engages in clinical care and research on neurological diseases. Professor Isobe mainly treats patients with neuroimmunological diseases, while also conducting neuroimmunological research, clinical epidemiological research, genetic research, and more. Associate Professor Matsuse's research themes include creating mouse models of multiple system atrophy, elucidating its pathophysiology, and developing therapeutic drugs. Associate Professor Matsuse is also in charge of supervising students in clinical clerkships and those assigned to the lab.

The neuropsychiatry lab studies the mind and brain across every stage of human life, from infancy to old age. It investigates them using many approaches, including neuroscience, molecular genetics, psychopathology, psychology, and sociology. The department includes labs for child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, cognitive behavioral therapy, neurophysiology, molecular psychiatry, and more. In the clinical graduate program, students can treat patients in specialty outpatient clinics while writing up their clinical research as papers, and advancing to the basic research graduate program is also welcome.

Nobuyuki Sudo, Professor

The Psychosomatic Medicine Lab studies internal medicine diseases related to stress, examining them from both the mental and the physical side. As the psychosomatic medicine department of Kyushu University Hospital, the lab also treats patients whose symptoms, such as headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, persist chronically and are thought to be related to stress. Prof. Sudo investigates, from both clinical and basic research perspectives, how external factors such as stress, gut bacteria, and food components are involved in diseases and pathological conditions. The research section of the lab's website lists allergy, neurophysiology, chronic pain, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and clinical psychology.
