The Morphology and Functional Pathology Lab at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University, engages in diagnostic pathology, basic research, and the training of future pathologists. Supported by a rich collection of cases built up over many years and by research supervision from chiefs for each organ system, the lab covers a wide range of research fields. In basic research, the lab combines molecular biology methods for examining proteins and genes with the morphological analysis techniques at which pathologists excel. Through diagnosis and autopsy, pathology is connected to nearly all clinical departments, and there is a growing amount of work related to biomarker testing for selecting treatments and to cancer genomic profiling gene panel testing.

The Clinical Laboratory Medicine Lab studies human specimens collected at the Clinical Laboratory Department of Kyushu University Hospital, analyzing them with mass spectrometry and spatial omics. The lab is a graduate school department set up alongside the Clinical Laboratory Department of Kyushu University Hospital. The lab aims to comprehensively capture the molecular characteristics of each individual's body and to contribute to the discovery of biomarkers needed for disease prevention and early diagnosis. Multiple themes are underway in parallel, including the mechanisms of thrombus formation, obesity, drug-resistant bacteria, and genetic analysis of thrombosis.

The Bacteriology Lab studies the functions of gut bacteria and their interactions with the immune system. The commensal microbiota living in the human gut plays an essential role in activating and maintaining the host's immune system. On the other hand, pathogenic bacteria that enter through the mouth use a variety of mechanisms to establish infection within the gut environment. Through research on both sides, the lab aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between bacteria and the host.

The Virology Lab studies how viruses multiply inside cells, focusing on hepatitis viruses, coronaviruses, and others. Viruses can multiply only inside cells, and they use multiple host factors to replicate themselves. Another characteristic of viruses is that they accumulate mutations as they multiply and change their properties. The professor considers it a mission, as a virus researcher, to respond quickly to the emergence of new viruses and to advance research that can contribute to infection control.

The lab's main research topics are the development of animal models of neurological disease and the analysis of how gut bacteria affect brain function. The lab's Professor researches how environmental factors affect neurological disease. The Assistant Professor's research theme is the role of neuropeptide Y in physiological function, with stress, circadian rhythm, and sleep as keywords. In the third-year lab assignment, students practice molecular analysis using samples collected in animal experiments.

From the standpoint of pathology, the lab aims to contribute to elucidating disease mechanisms and function, establishing new diagnostic methods, and developing new treatments, focusing mainly on diseases of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. Using molecular pathology, the lab studies the process of carcinogenesis and the immune microenvironment around tumors in a variety of tumors, including digestive diseases in general and tumors of the breast and respiratory organs. The lab's philosophy is to carry on morphological diagnosis, "examining morphology until a hole is worn through," a tradition unique to Kyushu University, while developing pathology research and diagnostics full of promise that lead to the next generation. Through broad pathological research, including morphological pathology, molecular pathology, and experimental pathology, graduate students develop the ability to find and solve problems on their own.

The lab researches the estimation of the time since death of deceased persons and personal identification based on dental findings. The lab works on estimating the time since death by measuring the color of livor mortis with a colorimeter. The lab is also developing methods to confirm identity from the condition of the teeth, using an intraoral scanner and artificial intelligence. There is also research from a pharmaceutical sciences perspective, through drug analysis of cases handled in forensic autopsies.

The Hygiene and Public Health Lab conducts interdisciplinary clinical and epidemiological research that bridges clinical and basic medicine. The lab aims to clarify the pathophysiology of various diseases and to establish methods of prevention and treatment. Through hands-on experience in epidemiological research and community-based preventive medicine, and through participation in international collaborative research, the lab also works to train people who can lead international clinical and epidemiological research. Undergraduate students who are interested are also told that they are welcome to contact the lab.

The Collaborative Oncology field conducts research toward the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, and is engaged in cancer education, as part of the Department of Social and Environmental Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. It was established in April 2024 through the merger of the Collaborative Social Medicine field and the Basic Radiation Medicine field. In medical school education, the lab offers opportunities to learn the molecular biology of cancer and cancer genomic medicine through lectures on medical oncology and genetics. The lab is strengthening its collaboration with the Cancer Center of Kyushu University Hospital and is advancing research on cancer immunity, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, drug resistance, and related topics.

The Health Care Administration and Management Lab conducts research and education in a variety of fields related to health care. The Department of Health Care Administration and Management works on research based on data science and on training people who will play central roles in the practice of health care administration and management. Faculty members belong to the Faculty of Medical Sciences and students belong to the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, where they carry out education and research. One of the faculty members uses the Fukuoka Stroke Registry to investigate factors related to stroke prognosis.
