The Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Lab chooses clinical questions from anesthesia care, intensive care, and the pain clinic as its research themes, and conducts both clinical and basic research. From professors to residents, every member continues clinical work centered on anesthesia in the operating rooms of the university hospital while also engaging in research. The lab holds that, precisely because its members are physicians working on the clinical front line, they can carry out research that is useful in daily anesthesia practice and that basic medical scientists would find difficult to conceive. It is a department with the history and tradition of having been the second of its kind established in Japan.

The Pediatric Nursing Lab pursues nursing care that supports children and families according to the life events that arise at each stage of development. It places particular emphasis on research, education, and practice in nursing care that supports children and families psychologically and socially. The lab works in collaboration with Tohoku University Hospital, schools, local communities, medical institutions, and other universities. It also trains pediatric nursing certified nurse specialists and engages in practice at a pediatric nursing outpatient clinic.

The Global Health Policy Lab studies global-scale health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, the spread of lifestyle-related diseases, and humanitarian crises caused by conflict and climate change. Using data such as one of the world's largest epidemiological datasets, the lab visualizes health challenges in fine detail, and on the basis of that scientific evidence, works with governments and international organizations in Japan and abroad to design policies and support their implementation. By moving back and forth between data and policy decision-making, the lab aims to generate insights that move the world. The lab is part of the Division of Disaster Medicine at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University.

The Ophthalmology Lab is part of the Tohoku University School of Medicine, and works on clinical care and research for eye diseases and on the training of physicians. Clinical care, research, and education are its three main pillars, and through research the lab aims for true prevention of blindness. Its research includes developing neuroprotective therapies, developing drug delivery systems, developing treatments for retinal diseases, and identifying the causative genes of hereditary diseases. A distinctive feature of the lab is that physicians, researchers in science, engineering, and pharmacy, researchers from companies, and international students work in the same place and discuss their research together.

The Orthopaedic Surgery Lab provides clinical care for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, such as the limbs and spine, and conducts a wide range of research from basic to clinical studies. The research page introduces groups working on joint mechanics, biomaterials such as artificial joints and artificial bone, cartilage and muscle, stiff shoulders, and posture and gait analysis. The lab also actively pursues joint research with other parts of Tohoku University, such as the Institute for Materials Research and the School of Dental Medicine. In clinical care, the university and its affiliated hospitals work together to provide the best treatment for each patient.

The Neurology and Psychiatry Lab (National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry) conducts research that combines clinical and basic approaches on diseases in neurology. The lab investigates the causes of neurological diseases based on genome analysis, and carries out clinical research based on the confirmed disease subtypes. It is a doctoral-course lab in Medical Science, and its listed keywords are clinical neurology, molecular genetics, and neurodegenerative diseases.

The lab studies, from a genomic perspective, why the same drug works differently or causes different side effects from person to person. It investigates at the molecular level how genetic polymorphisms, small differences in DNA sequence in the human genome, affect drug response. Its methods include genome analysis with next-generation sequencers, functional analysis of drug-metabolizing enzymes, and quantitative analysis of drugs and metabolites by LC-MS/MS. The lab's website also introduces it under the name "Hiratsuka PGx Lab."

The lab focuses on infectious diseases in disasters and studies the development of antiviral drugs and other treatments for infectious diseases. It works not only on the epidemiology and diagnosis of pathogens but also on developing therapeutic drugs, and it also clarifies the mechanisms of drug resistance and improves diagnostic methods. International collaborative research with the United States and other countries, as well as within Japan, is active. The lab belongs to the Disaster Medical Science Division of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and its faculty also hold appointments in the Graduate School of Medicine.

The lab studies the medium- and long-term effects of large-scale disasters on health, using large-scale epidemiological surveys. As the foundation of its research, the lab has built the "Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study," a research design that is the first of its kind in the world. It aims to identify effective health improvement measures for each stage of life starting from the fetal period, and to put them into practice. Using molecular epidemiology methods, it also works to elucidate the pathology of multifactorial diseases, including autism spectrum disorder.

The lab studies connective tissue diseases (collagen diseases), chronic inflammatory diseases that affect the whole body, from the perspective of autoimmune mechanisms. The lab carries out basic research using serum and cells from actual patients, and aims to develop new diagnostic methods and treatments by integrating basic research with clinical practice. The lab's website is shared with the Department of Rheumatology and Connective Tissue Diseases at Tohoku University Hospital, where the same professor serves as department head. In April 2025, a fourth-year student from the Department of Health Sciences, Division of Laboratory Science, began graduation research in this lab.
